Have one yearling with a rough redish winter coat still. Have another who shed late. Would you cull these rather than trying to bred them? They are in good flesh, but it seems like this kind are sub fertile?
 
i have two calves that where born in December that still have some redish winter coat still blended in with a nice black summer coat underneath. Mine I know is hereditary because the comments on the AI bull I used (payweight plus) mentioned that a few times. I would not cull because of the hair color but would keep mine for replacements if they were heifers instead of steers. If you are confident that they are sub fertile for other reasons than hair color, I would cull for that reason though.
 
If they breed, keep them. The study on hair coat said that the younger cattle are slower to shed but with a hair coat score of 1 to 5 (1=slick and 5=yak) that there was not significant differences with the 1, 2 or 3 scores. There is a fuzz pattern that some animals have genetically and it does not affect them with heat or fescue. I prefer the greasy looking slick cattle i summer but if a cow works, that's proof to me. On bulls I tend to stay with the slick pattern.
 
My late calving cows tend to be shiny and aged, or young and fuzzy.
So I guess the question is are they fuzzy due to genetics or adaptability or both?

My fuzzy girls have a little Hereford or Simmental in 'em or naturally have more curl while my full Angus do seem to slick off earlier. All have access to minerals in various locations. Looking back at the past 4 years, doesn't seem to have any impact on whether they calve early or late - but I retain heifers based on a history of early calving dams, regardless of breed, and that characteristic usually carries on.
 
I had a 1/4 simangus heifer out of Connealy Impression that was "fuzzy" as a yearling. I attempted to breed her anyway. She took AI as a 15 mo. old, wet 2, 3 and will be AI bred in November (#4) as long as she delivers a live calf in early September. She has longer hair than most of my cows, but she lost the fuzzy look in her second summer. Slicked off pretty good by mid June if I remember correctly. I always worry about those fuzzy gals just suffering too much on the fescue, but I HAVE noticed that several of those fuzzy girls will shed off fine in their second summer and beyond. Occasionally you'll just get one that won't shed, but for whatever reason, they don't last long at my place.
