Heifer Bred Status Pricing

Was looking at some heifers for sale private treaty by these bred status groups:
open ready to breed is cost,
bred is cost + 20%,
open, w first-calf cost + 40%.

In general, is this standard increase? Would you think any of these groups were a better deal if all else were equal?

What stage or period does bred mean? I can't believe only a 20% increase for a 3rd period heifer? 40% additional seems to cheap as well for a pair.

"cost" a month ago versus cost today is a huge dufference. Cost plus is a great deal on increasing markets. Bad deal for the situation we are in.

I raise and sell bred heifers. Over the last three years the average difference between the price of ready to breed heifers and confirmed 4 month bred heifers is about 40%. That is a complete vaccination program and AI bred to calving ease bulls. What the market is going to do next year is anyone's guess. I know I am sure glad I contracted the heifers back in June.

These are fall calving bred heifers, so I assume they are 1st period

I think the pairs. Your location winter is a good time to be raising calves for hopefully a better spring market. It reasonable to expect them to breed back and be on thier second about the same time the unproven opens are calving thier first. :2cents:

I plugged numbers in to see results.
Open heifer $1500
Bred heifer 1500 + 300 (20%) = $1800
Young cow/calf pair $2100 base price of 1500 plus 40% 600 + 1500 = $2100

The young cow/calf pair is by far the best buy.
Problems of first calving are behind her, you've got a live calf and now you can properly judge her udder to boot.

25% of 1800 = 450 or 2250

40% = 720 + 1800 = 2520
1013 = 56.28% of 1800 for $2,813

The 20% and 40% assumptions are actually 25% and 56% + it kind of makes a difference.

I want in on that market. First calf pairs are going for about half of that right now at the sale barn.

You would have 2300 in the open heifer by the time she calved by my formula.
My philosphy is still SS heavies especially with the downturn.
Posted these record prices were not going to hold lot of people thought I was nuts.

This was from an April thread.
Was largely on retaining and buying replacements.
Average cost to raise a heifer was 1900 the most to pay for a replacement
was 2400 with the five year forecast.
Forecast was the market steady this year then declining till 2021.


I still say SS heavies for no more than 200 over kill price.
Wouldn't buy heifers until prices bottom out, here it is normally Nov, Dec.
I would be buying hay waiting on opportunity girls.
Wait that is why I have surplus hay reserves.

At Dublin pairs brought up to $2675.00.

I'm sure glad I sold my calves and cows when I did... I don't need to worry about it anymore.

if i could get NICE bred heifers for in the $2000 range I'd be all over that.. average ones I may as well keep my own stock and know the history.

I've got ten cows left. That's it. 6 calves suckling and a bull. 17 total head.
