Heat cycles

I brought up my last group of cows (5 head) to A.I. about 60 days ago. We went through the normal procedures of worming, vaccines etc. Waited 1 week then implanted with CIDR's. Waited 7 days, pulled implants and gave prostiglandin. I had 5 days to get them all bread. Should be just right, yes? Well no. They should have come in within 3 days. They did not, They all started around the 5th or 6th day when I went out of town. Fast forward to day 25 (next heat cycle). 1 cow came in on day 24, the others are still not showing any signs and it is now day 25. These cows probably BCS at 3-5. A couple just never bounced back after the druoth a couple years ago. However this has not happened in the other groups that ive brought home to breed in the last few months. I'm thinking either mineral defieciency or they justt need more fat on them to Cycle the way they need to. Then again I do not really know how cysts effect cows. You "kind" folks give me some ideas please.

ok have your vet palpate the cows.if a cow has cystic overies she wont cycle.an she wont breed.wich means her overies wont produce an egg.if your cows are cystic your vet can treat them.an you may clear them up.an get them to breed back.but in some cases you cant clear up cystic overies.an have to cull the cows.

If you gave GNRH when you put the CIDRs in, that should have cleared up a cow who is cystic. That is unless you must give a larger dose than normal. I forget.

If your cows are truely a BCS 3, that may be your answer right there. Even a 4 won't cycle and breed like they should. 5's should more than likely be OK, but I would be concerned about their condition being the main culprit.

I did not give the GNRH on this set. But as I read and think about it. It was the best conditioned cow that came in. It may well be the BCS which is embarrasing. I think we cut back too much on nutrtion trying to save money during the winter. Thanks for jarring my brain a bit

Maintaining BCS is much less expensive than trying to regain it. But I guess you just learned that the hard way.

I do agree about the body score however the majority of our herd was 3 and all bred but two on the first shot, cought them on the second heat and they took just fine. Probably because I kept them on a strict mineral program even when feed was hard to comeby.
Make sure that you check the ones for "silent" signs of heat. I have notice that sometimes there are a few that will be in heat but won't stand for mounting. I bred one tonight for a neighbor. She wouldn't stand to be mounted but had all the other more suttle symptoms.
I have checked them and they were swollen internally. Bred them and they took having given them another GNRH shot at breeding. Make sure you know ALL the signs of heat and this may help as well. Just my opinion. Hope it helps a little.
