Heartworm tablets

How many of you give your dogs heartworm tablets every month?

When I lived in Georgia, my dogs got them every month. Now that I live in Wyoming, there is no need to give them heart worm medication because Wyoming does not have a problem with heart worms.

We give ours Liquid Ivermectin orally...My husband did it for years with his working dogs..heck of alot cheaper then the pills. :D

I give it to beagles with an injection. But don't give the ivimect plus or don't give it to collie breeds.

I do...once a month...like clockwork.

I lost a wonderful chow to the heartworm treatment. She got them when I lived in Virginia for 1 year. When we moved there from TX there wasn't a heartworm problem in TX, so I never thought about it. Live and learn.

I think it all depends on the climate and area you live in.. in east Texas we give it to them pretty regularly but when I lived in west texas I don't ever remember doing it...

Same here. Idaho doesn't have a problem with them either.

I started the 2 dogs, Charger the beagle, and Turbo the Newfoundland on the heartworm tablets, its not gonna be as expensive as I thought, a 6 month dose for each will run about $5 per month, now all I got to do is remember to give them each a tablet once a month , now that could be a challenge-lol

Gail we give the heartworm tablets here in Minnesota. It used to be from the onset of the mosquito season to the end of it, but now the vet recommends it year round. I had an awful time remembering to do it, so I force myself to sit down with the calendar when I get home from the vets and put the little red heart stickers on each month.

Yes that is what I am doing too. They need to stay on it permanently , also before they could go on it, they both had a blood test done , to make sure they did not have it already. I picked a date which I was more likely to remember.

Gail we use HeartGuard (I think) ...just a big chunk that must taste good..the dog loves it.

I use Interceptor once a month. Here in the South we have mosquitoes year round. Even in the dead of winter when we have a warm snap, the blood suckers come out of hiding. I have read where some vets recommend year round treatment in all of the lower 48.

Not really - just pick a day that has some significance. For example, I chose the first of each month because it was easy for me to remember. If giving the medication once a month is a problem, there is always Heartguard (I think that is what it's called) which is given every day.
