just bought some haygrazer bales.my ? is what is the difference between that and sudan or regular hay.how good is it for cows.it looks very coarse.

Haygrazer (the sorghram species) is usually coarse and protein level tends to range between about 5 & 8%. Good bermuda hay in the 10 to 12% range.

Based on protein level, haygrazer should sell for about 1/2 of what high quality bermuda grass sells for.

Bluestem grass is also low in protein.

Dane12,

you can take a core sample of the hay and have it tested (just as many people have their soil tested). The test, at least in my area, is very cheap, and it lets you know EXACTLY what your hay has, so you can develop a correct strategy for feeding in the winter (supplements etc.) Usually gives you a protein level and a TDN level. The protein level is important, but if the TDN is low, it's all for nothing, and can actually induce the cow to eat less.
