Hay Season 2014

I hope we have a hay season. Our hay is maybe 1/2 of normal. Late freeze and no rain has made it bad.
Same deal here. I pulled some the other day and smashed it and mashed it and my hands didn;t get wet or green.

Go to h3ll you guys.. I'm a month away still! It's finally warmed up a little, it's no-shirt weather now when it's nice, but the rain yesterday was nothing to speak of, I'm irrigating at full speed now

This is kinda starting like 2007 here. Freeze in April after I had fertilized earky and had a good hay crop started. It stood there for week without grownig. Then the rains didnt come and by July everything was brown. I bought a tractor trailer load of large bales of corn stalks out of western ky that fall and the cows made it through. But the grass has just in the last year or so recovered. I hope it is not a repeat. At least cattle are high this time. I seen very good cows go through the market at a cheap kill price because nobody had any grass or hay.

Ours is behind here, seem like grass was a few weeks behind with the late cold temps. It took a good jump this past week, up until this weekend it was pretty dry for this time of the year. 5 inches since Friday sure got things wet in a hurry. Grass seems to be trying to head out real short.

KT We get about 2 inches of rain per week its crazy My fields and patures are headed out the fescue that its crazy. I clipped some pasture today too.

We've had a bunch of rain, but not enough really warm days to really make it grow. Prob be another week to 2 before we can get some down.

Yep I put down about 30 acres of barley/vetch 2 days ago... and then rain moved in sooner than expected. So I started raking last night, and this morning too yet.... will bale today. Also put down a cover crop of rye as I don't think I'll have time to let the steers graze it all down before I have to plow it down for soybeans.

Now see....if we got 2 inches a week, no way could we put a tractor across pastures.

Looking good Sky!!

We are about 10 days away... going to depend a lot on the weather. We have been getting some rain, but more importantly, our nights are still a little cool to be curing good right now. Typically we start around the 1st of June, but it looks to be just a little early for us this year.

Good look with your hay this year!

I like starting first cut around mid june, second cut in beginning of august, leaves good regrowth for grazing and an optional 3rd cut on really good fields

My Bermuda will probably be close to a month late. The cold and long winter has been rough. The dry spring has not helped.

I have standing water or snow just about everyplace and am still feeding hay at about the same rate as I was in March.

Only cut hay once UP here and its usually starts around the 4th of July and often goes into August.

we are still about 30 days away from cutting hay.but thats ok as we are getting rain 3 or 4 days a week right now.sky what are you going todo with that hay.

Same here in Oklahoma. If it started raining this week (which it hasn't) I would not expect a cutting until close to July 4th. That is a good three weeks later than most years.

Yup! AND, the fescue is already in full seed, so no more growth. Crappy hay this year, that if for sure. Not sure if we will get a cutting this spring, good thing I traded a fall bred cow for 100 bales of hay a few weeks ago!

Finally!!!
Getting some rain today. Hopefully this will give the Bermuda a big boost. We have been dry for a couple of weeks.

Thanks TN
I have been rolling and had some serious tractor time the last few days with hay and planting beans. I hope everyone gets the rain they need and or dry weather to dry out and cut and bale their hay.

Same here Kenny. Those last back to back hard freezes put a dent in the grass growing. Clover was just coming back from it. Then got too hot too fast.
Guess you guys are getting this rain today? Been blessed with .80 so far. Got the mower ready for the first cutting. Maybe with good rain we'll see a better 2nd cutting.
