Hay Roller Fire

I’m glad you were ok, and were able to save your equipment. Those fires can get bad quick before you even have a chance to react to them.

Bearing went out in my hay roller Friday and set a roll of hay on fire. Lost the hay roll but saved the roller.
In the last 2 weeks i know of 5 hay roller fires in my area, 2 were total loss, 1 got the tractor also.
Never heard of that here in the past.
I have heard of it a few times around here. I never knew one to get the tractor, too. I keep a fire extinguisher in the cab of my tractor.

One of these little $10 gadgets checking bearing temperatures along will give an early warning. Bearings go out over time and extra heat is a warning. I check mine but need to do it more often. A couple times through the years had close calls as a hot bearing melted a belt and another time, I seen smoke out the top from a bearing on top going out. I keep my balers insured 4 sure. Alos get the extra dust and hay off everyday and spray penetrating oil on all bearings that are not greaseable.

DESOMIYE laser thermometer gun adopts the latest high-sensitivity temperature sensor, which can measure the temperature range of -50°C~600°C (-58°F~1112°F) in only 0.5 seconds. For best results, the reader should be 14 inches away from the object.

Unless they finally moved it, there was a burned up baler and a badly charred JD tractor sitting in the middle of a hayfield for years over near new Waverly Texas. Drove by it every time I'd go to Bryan co-op.

Well I was going to tell you whatever you do don't spend the insurance check on a boat. But it sounds like that might be ok in your case. 😆
No insurance, but paid the dealer to go over the roller last winter. They respliced the belts, replaced pickup bearings, checked everything else according to them. Im gonna see what they say tomorrow.

i'm glad i use the old stuff 851 auto tie new holland chain/bar roller it might not be able to do the small stuff like a belt can but at least i've not heard of one of them catching fire and burning up

They have bearings and they will catch the bale on fire. Local fella has a burned 850 and an 851 in his back field.

Other thing with a chain baler is a good belt baler will put out more bales in a day than the chain will put out in a week. Ha
