Last Sunday night a friend about a 1/4 mile from me and the other side of a 2 lane road had about 20 calves go thru a 5 strand barb wire fence and get out on the road. He got a few in that night and the others were not to be found in the dark. Ten showed up the next day here at my place and I just left them in my pasture while he was trying to find the rest of them. A few days later 3 more showed up here leaving about 3 or 4 missing. While in town yesterday saw a guy I know that works for the state road department and mentioned it to him thinking he is out and about a lot and might see or hear something. He told me a guy that lives right up the road was complaining about calves in his food plots on the place than joins me on the back side. It is his dad's place and he built a new house up on the road, they know that me and a couple neighbors have cattle that could have easily gotten out and came over on them. They never attempted to let anyone know anything. The guy that was complaining about his food plots being messed up in a guy that I have had trouble with hunting on me. Guess this goes to show you what kinda of people live near you, some are truly neighbors and friends while others just live in the area.

Good neighbors can really make you or break you. I've been really blessed over the years to have good ones even here in my valley pastures. There have only been a handful of times when my neighbors have acted selfishly when I had cattle problems and one of those times that neighbor showed up hat in hand to apologize for his actions. Most of the times when I've had cattle out here in the valley I find out about it the next day when I see the tracks where my neighbors ran them back in.

Creek is between me and the only neighbor with cows helps a lot. Rest of the neighbors would come by and tell me where they were. But wouldn't care for them being on them. One neighbor will call and ask me to bring the cows to there place.

Around here I like to be patient and helpful when someone's cattle get on me because the next time it could be mine that are out.Most of my neighbors over he years have been people who believed in helping each other without thinking about themselves.My kind of people.

Not sure how long he had these, but he keeps them by his house and chicken barns for quite a while. He does that so he can see them several times a day then moves them over towards me by the road. Never had cattle problems with anyone. But the tales I could tell about horse's, a mule and donkey's being on my land would make you sick. And the law doesn't want to help, and certified letters from the judge is used as fire starter. It's a shame that you can't legally shoot dumb azz rednecks, sometimes. Good neighbors are priceless.
Somebodies animals get on my place I tell them to leave them there for a few days and I will catch them for them and probably deliver them back to you. Its much easier to wait for the cows to cycle around back towards the pens and gently catch theirs with a few of mine. Works better for everyone involved.
One of our neighbors called yesterday; cow wasn't out but a calf was bawling & he wanted to make sure it was okay (he was fine, momma was grazing). Awesome neighbor! And yet another neighbor with an adjoining pasture finds humor every time his bull gets in with our heifers. I don't see the humor in having the vet come out every year to preg check & subsequently Lutalyse our heifers that have been "accidentally" bred. Doc missed one this year & we pulled a 107 lb bull calf (our HEIFER bull averages 69). But what do you do?

This has never happened to me before, but a couple of weeks ago I had two heifers jump the fence and get out. Apparently something scared them. It was during a bad thunderstorm. I got a call that they were out. So we went as fast as we could. Looked everywhere and could not find them. My neighbor who is my cousin has a pasture across the road. I surmised that they had gotten in with his. Sure enough, they just made themselves at home. He told me not to worry that he would get them back. The next day he delivered them in his trailer back to my pasture. I am really blessed to have good cousins as neighbors who help me when I need it. Others are good to call and let me know if they see one out.

They did put in a hot wire after our last incident; so far so good & the bull we have in this year is bigger/older, hopefully more of a deterrent. I was dangerously close to Bruce Jenner-ing his bull with a 30-06 ;-)
