I have a black brahma-limo cross heifer. Her hooves are terrible. They have been this way ever since I weaned her from her mom. She had to be roped and I swear it happened then because of the feet involved. The guy that did says no.

My first thought is why keep this heifer?

Looks like maybe she's been foundered if she was not born like that.

Hitchin a ride is what that heifer needs all the way to the salebarn. Why would you want to retain that in your herd. You will never fix those hooves it's over she foundered.

do you have a processing plant near you ? if so let her get some weight on and sell we have one here in town :x

Joy, that heifer will never be right. If you try to keep her, you're risking propagating that into the next generation. To say nothing of her constantly having lameness problems.

I would also send her to the auction barn or packing plant. Sorry, but if you have cattle you'll have to face this kind of stuff.

Well I will respectfully disagree with the last post. You can research and ponder all you want but the bottom line is the cow will always be problems. Do you want a problem animal around for a long term? There are too many good animals around to keep bad ones. Second if it could be passed along would you want it to be? I'd never risk having problems in my genetics. I would guess foundered as well but why take the risk? Ship the cow and buy another one.

Send these photos to TX A&M University. I don't necessarily disagree with what's been suggested to you, but I personally would like to have someone that has researched something like this to give me some indication as to what it is...what caused it...and how to avoid it.

Well thanks for your advice. I have had Stormie for almost 2 years. This is not something she was borned with. I will send the photos to A&M Alice. Thanks all. I'm just not sure about selling her for 10 cents a lb.

Once again, and this is the final time, so listen up, Mr. Burno. I did not suggest that Joy keep the animal. I suggested that she send pics to experts to try to find out what it was and how to avoid it. So, other than trying to nail my hide to a wall, what's your point?

Point is simple pet owners want to analyze simple crap to death wasting time and money. If you had seen more than two or three cows you would know what a foundered one looks like.
Joy the cow is yours if you want a pet keep by all means.
You will have more problems with this animal, and more than likely have to put a bullet between her eyes. Remember if she goes down you can't sell her only thing left to do is shoot her and you butcher her and put her in your freezer.

Where in the world did you hear you would get 10 cents a pound. Even canners and cutters here are bringing 50 cents.

Yep, we've all seen cows with bad feet. You have 3 choices:

1- Keep her and get them trimmed (might work, but doubtful)
2- Keep her until she goes downhill from being unable to get around and graze
3- Sell her
