Pulled my first calf in 5 years. Had a heifer get down after she had labored about as much as she could. Not a real hard pull but it was a big bull calf probably 90 to 95 lbs. She seems to be doing fine and the calf seems to be fine. I am still waiting on it to get up and nurse. She is cleaning it up well. I had 5 calves born since late last night. They keep hitting the ground :cowboy:

Long as they hit the ground and bounce up and suck all is good :)

Do you have a storm front moving in/ pressure change?, seems that gets em calving here. Good luck on your future calvings!

Kind of irrelevant I guess to post this, but we had to pull one today as well. I had bought a heifer with the intention that she wasn't bred, and guess what, today we found out she was. Even though she was a big cow(part charolais), the calf was atleast 10-20 pounds too big. It was a 90-100 lb bull calf and we couldn't save it. Makes me so mad when people sell their heifers that are bred to too big of a bull. It looked like it was half gert, but it was atleast the size of our 2-3 month old calves that are out of an angus bull. :? This is the first calf we've had to pull in years too.
 
This one was out of my bull. He has never thrown a big calf before so I am thinking that this one is on her. This heifer wasn't real big when she was born but she weighed 800 lbs at 6.5 months old. There is probably an "elephant" gene back in her lineage somewhere :lol2:
 
I like the picture. Something about a 2 year old watching over her calf is just amazing. An older cow cleans the baby, gets them nursing, and it's just another day to them. A 2 year old just seems different in the whole process of becoming a mother.

It happen's from time to time.
I haven't pulled one in 10 year's of my own.
When Char's first got popular I wore out a set of chain's.
We had no idea what an EPD was or knew nothing about calfing ease.
Hoss what I would do is really watch her sometimes you get a cow in the herd that the DNA just doesn't work with the bull. Seen it in have a cow that alway's raises the best calf change the bull and now she has dink's or BW shoot's up.
And this could just have been an anomaly as well.
 
CB, I have it written down in my notebook. We will see if a pattern emerges. Her calves will be terminal anyway so if the next calf she has is big but she has it unassisted I won't worry about it but I will not keep a heifer out of her.
 
Looks to me like all the hair was the problem! :shock: Little guy came out with his winter coat on just in case. Looks like a good pair and I would be very surprised if she were ever to have a problem again.
