I went to the local gun shop looking for a new .223 rifle for coyotes. After me and the shop owner done some horse trading, wheeling and dealing, lying, exagerating and acting insulted I walked out with this baby. It is a Remington 700 VTR (sorry 3way it is not a Savage :mrgreen: ) in .223 Rem. I ordered a new 4x12 Nikon to go on it. I should have it by the weekend in time to break in the barrel and zero it in. Should make a great coyote gun.

Nice gun Hoss, clean the trigger and safety up and it will be a fine gun. At least the gun companies have lighten the triggers up a little bit anyway.

Right back atcha. Just finished mounting the scope. (20yr old Tasco World Class 8-32x50) about an hour ago. It is not the triangle barrel it is a semi bull Model 700 Varminter, chambered in .204 Ruger. BTW my buddy has the same rifle you bought and loves it. It is definately a tack driver. I am going to change out the trigger on mine tomorrow and go with one that has been reworked to 1.5lbs!

HOss what kind of rings are those? I use almost always the Burris Signature Zee rings with steel basses. The new rifle got a set of Leupolhigh dovetails cuz i had em and was too cheap to spend anymore money this week. I usually don't use them cuz they have to be lapped in.

The safety seems fine. The trigger, while crisp, is 4.5 lbs on my RCBS trigger pull gage and I can't get it to adjust any lighter without replacing springs which I am not familiar enough with the X-Mark Pro trigger group to undertake that job. I would be satisfied at 2.5 lbs but prefer 1.5 lbs. I may just replace it with a Timney.

Those are some Weaver rings and bases that I had sitting around. I will eventually replace them with Leupold like I use on most of my other rifles though I never have had any issue with the Weavers.

I like! I thought about the .204 Ruger round but went with the .223 since I already have a ton of ammo and am set up for reloading. How do you like the .204?

I like the 204. This is the first one i have owned but i have loaded others for some friends and they were all pretty accurate.

Thanks Jo! I can't wait to see how it shoots. I normally would never use that many scope shades but they came with it and sometimes the mirage is so bad that they really do come in handy.
I bought that scope 7 years ago from an estate and it had never been mounted so this is it's maiden voyage. It has a fine crosshair and a target dot. I am not sure but i think the dot is 1/4 MOA.

The best group I've shot was 1.25 inches 5 shots at 200 yards . I've killed several yotes and a few hogs with it . Those are nice looking rifles .

I just switched mine out. It had been done by my neighbor who is an older benchrest shooter and excellant amateur gunsmith. Sounds like you have a winner there. Do you handload if so what are you shooting in it.

I haven't started reloading yet . I've bought a single stage last year but I haven't set it up yet .im shooting hornady customs now . I believe they are 55 grain hallow points .

I've adjusted the trigger down as far as it will adjust and still can't get it below 4.5 lbs. No slam-fire issues though. 4.5 lbs is more than double what I like so I may have a smith look at it and see if the springs can be replaced in the trigger or I'll just jerk it out and put a Timney in. The X-Mark Pro trigger on it breaks well but it feels like I am having to put the death grip on it to make it go off. 4.5 lbs might as well be 45 lbs on a varmint rifle.

I kept turning 1/2 revolution at a time and checking the pull until I backed that sucker all the way out and it didn't seem to get but just a smidgen lighter. I put the RCBS trigger pull force gage on it and it pulled 73 oz's.

Mine had the same trigger as yours. It was set at 6.5 lbs from the factory. It will probably end up in the trash!

I went ahead and put a Leupold 1 pc base and rings on it, mounted the scope and had about 45 minutes of daylight to shoot it. It was raining so I shot from the prone position w/ bi-pod off my front porch at about 50 yards to get it on paper. Seems to be a tack driver in spite of the trigger. I shot it out at a dry leaf on the island in my lake which is about 150 yards from the front porch. It appeared to hit about 2" to the right of the center of the leaf. Could have been me. My 3 shot group at 50 were all touching. Next good day I will really wring it out and see what it will do from a bench at 100.
