Guaranteed Open ..... Sale Barn Jargon

I watch a lot of cattle auctions online and often time several lots will run through where the auctioneer will say that they are "Guaranteed Open." Now I know what an open cow is, but is there a certain type of buyer that these are directed towards.
I would assume feedlot buyers as they are usually 600 # upwards, but could they be purchased as replacements and be ok ?

Has any of you bought replacements this way and they turned out ok ?

They are open and can go to the feed lot or for replacements to the bull of your choice. Pretty much what you had figured.

I usually see them in group sales and they have all their shots and are ready to be shipped and fed.

They say that because it's not fun aborting or worse yet, calving out heifers in a feedlot. Especially immature ones. You'll find a lot of people who don't even want heifers on feed, and the ones that do, haven't hit a wreck yet.

They aren't actually guaranteed "open". They are guaranteed they will not check bred, so they are either open or bred 6 weeks or less. If they guarantee them open, it means you can run them back to the vet and have him preg check them. You pay the vet if they check open and if they check bred, you don't own the heifers and you don't pay the vet. True, the feedlots want them open, but most of them give every heifer they buy a shot to abort. If a heifer is checked open, then comes up bred in a couple of months, there is no way to say whether she was bred on the farm, in the sale barn, or in the feedlot, so there is no way to guarantee "open".

A lot of the calves I background are heifers. Never kept up with how many ended up already bred when they come to my place, but its been a few over the years. A CPH sale is about the only time I see "guaranteed open" heifers. Sometimes a heifer will catch my eye enough to turn her out with my cow herd.

I'm assuming you are referring to the sale price? If so, that would be $130/cwt.(hundred weight), so if a calf weighs 200lbs. And brought $130/cwt., it cost $260, if it weighed 400lbs. The cost would be $520/head etc. Is that what you were asking?

I always break it down.. Easier for me to look at it that way. 130.0 would be 1.30/lb. 1.30 X 400 is 520. Either way. Just easier for me to see it that way than by the 100.

With our marketing association they are gauranteed open. If they come up bred it costs you 100 bucks per head that IS bred.
