Ground Rods

I been holding off asking this. Had it all typed up once and backed out. I feel pretty stupid asking what I am sure is a simple question.

How do you pull a ground rod out of the ground?

I have found 3 so far in different places on the farm. They are in the way.

I don't really want to drive them below grade, but that is where I am heading.

I've took an old piece of steel like an old plow point and drill a hole(drillpress) somewhat bigger than the ground rod and welded a piece of chain to it ....then hook that to my front end loader.....slide the steel over the ground rod and it will pull it right up.

Put a clamp on the ground rod, loop logging chain below clamp and pull out using tractor and drawbar.

Hopefully it is just a straight rod, if it is a screw in type anchor rod, you ain't pulling it up. you will have to screw it out. Our local electric co-op uses those type.

We pull them with chains at work. If your careful you can do it with out bending. Use your fel and a chain. Wrap the chain down the rod at least 3 wraps and hook it back to its self close to the top of the rod. (Hook it short)

Use a chain that is not too big, wrap the chain around the rod like a miller's knot, ease up on the lift so that you see that it tightens on and grips the rod prior to the big pull and up it will come. Same for pipes, t posts or other slick or round objects.

ugh found too many things people cut off at or just below grade.

Utility people seem to be good at this

In a prior life I always needed temporary ground rods for work. If you're using round rod, turning it back and forth with vice grips breaks the bond in ground, or even a further tap down, then 2pairs of vicegrips clamped across like a T handle (most times) you can turn it back and forth and pull it up. Or they will hold a chain if you have a machine to do the pulling, just clamp them on, and loop chain below. Keeps chain from slipping up.

Many times I was in a remote area, so I had to pull them by hand, or leave them behind.

instead of vice grips i use pipe wrenches, good luck

I use a front tow bracket & chain loop bolted to it, off of a heavy duty ford truck, for pulling t-post and ground rods with FEL. The ground rods are a little trickier because they're smooth but vice grips help it from slipping.
By the way: The tow bracket is a oval loop to put a chain through, not a tow hook. Slips right over t-posts and locks on notches.

Small chain on the front end loader. One was 7 feet long. Came out day that way.
