Greeneville TN Livestock Auction

Did anyone buy or sale at Greeneville sale this past weekend 1-17-15? I took four calves weighting 525 to 575 and I was very disappointed in what they brought. I had a good black steer calf weight 550 and it brought $1.20 the cheapest was a Holstein heifer that brought .75 a pound. All calves were average or better. I'm wondering what went on? They have not updated their weekly prices on the internet.

I had to work Saturday and took the calves Friday evening. I guess the next time if I can't go to the auction I won't take any calves. This was an expensive lesson. I lost money on every calf I took.

Something went bad wrong I'd say.

Im looking at the sale report from the 16th and it says prices were down but not that far down.

I just noticed the sale report was for 1-9 through 1-15 so if yours sold yesterday you're right, that haven't updated it yet.

Cattle are down and I did hear that they were cheaper at Greenville. But was told the quality of the calves was terrible and that ruins the sale when it is like that. I dont think we had any calves bringing over 3.02 today but the better calves sold pretty good. I only bought one calf, a 295lb yellow pot gutted calf that had been raised on the bottle. He still cost 2.55 so not cheap. Only had 1 holstein and it looked terrible and weighed 395. The guy that brought it in no saled it at 1.45 which I thought was too high. I understand people having to work and I am lucky Monday is my day off so I can always be there. I encourage everyone to watch their calves sell. Why spend a year getting them ready and then just have to take whatever they bring wif you are not there.

Really sorry to hear that rdp. I know that's a sick feeling. We've all been there before. I haven't heard from anyone else this week, but I t might be worth talking to Phil and try to get more details about the sale and prices. I hope they didn't mix yours up with someone else's somehow.

Some times you have to know what the calves you have are worth first. Not every calf is the best, only to you maybe.
And yes I see every calf sell every week here at the local market and for some reason if mine is not bringing what I think it is worth I just keep bidding until it does or everyone stops bidding and I get it back. That has not happened in a long time. But I buy calves every week so no one thinks its odd for me to be bidding.

If they are not bringing what you expect or want, you start bidding yourself and either get them where you want them or buy them back.

For Saturday at Greenville the report shows 5wt steers in the 2.30s and 2.40s. Since you had a Holstein I'm going to ask if this 1.20$ black steer might have had some dairy in him? 75$ for a 5wt Holstein heifer in east TN is not far from what I would have expected.

Denver, what do the barns around here charge you when you buy them back? Do you eat the normal fees or do they waive them? Do most barns charge you anything if you just no sale them? What about your way Kenny?

I am a small operator I buy about 60 to 75 calves a year and fatten them up and sell them. I try to go to 4 or 5 sales a month. I may not be an expert, but I do know a little about cattle. These 4 calves were worth more than I got for them.

Talked to one of the sale owners of the sale barn today and he remembers my calves. He badmouthed my calves and thinks I got what the were worth. I guess that just adds insult to injury.

Like I said earlier, next time I sell any calves I will be there to keep this from happening again.

Said they were poor quality, one had a short ear. I pour feed in the troth every day and never saw a problem with their ear. All were healthy. Like I said I would like to buy several of that quality for that price. I would like to talk to some one who was at the auction last Saturday.

That's my thinking. I have had good results with them in the past, its convenient with the way I work. They even got commission on two of the calves twice, one when I bought and when I sold them. They weren't poor quality when I bought them.

I don't know where your located from greeneville, but if it's not to far you might want to put enought together to make it worth taking them to Athens, crossville or sweetwater.

Please don't take this in a negative way towards yourself, I'm not saying you don't know good cattle and I'm not saying that you didn't get done wrong.
