O.k. first off, thanks to msscamp. Last week I lost a big bull calf (it was dead when I got back from work), and I've been moping around until msscamp basically told me to get my head out of my "you know what", that it happens to all of us. Ofcourse I knew that, but it was nice of her to help.
This morning me and the middle daughter were riding out to check the cows. She was excited because I told her that I had to sort some calves so I would let her ride the paint with me. Anyway driving through the pasture with the cows, I was explaining that you always needed to be on the look out for cows that are laying down when all of the others are up, because they may be having a calf or other trouble. She then said "Like that one dady?". I looked over in the corner of the pasture, and sure enough she was right. When we got over there, the heifer had just had her first calf and was still laying down. She got up quick and the bull calf started sucking quick. I felt lucky. Here's a pic of the baby and another of the baby with new moma. Cow is a limo cross.
So we went back and got everyone in the whole family up, as it's a tradition that we all go back and look at new calves together. Afterwards we drove to where the horses were and I saddled up my paint gelding and gave Emma a ride back to the house as a "reward" for spotting the heifer calving. Us on "socks":
It was then we I realized how lucky I was, and it wasn't because of a live bull calf. All of my family (3 kids and the wife) were all healthy, having a good time, and happy. There is nothing better. Needless to say Emma got a real long ride back to the house and we stopped many times on the way back because she wanted to pic flowers (weeds) for her mom. Now that's a great morning.
