How many people feed grain to their beef cows? My cows never see grain. The only time we feed grain is just before weaning to the calves and the while we hold the calves til after January 1st. We feed straw, alfalfa, sorghum sudan hay and grass hay. The percentage of each depending on the year. Our cows seem to do well, in fact they sometimes get too fat. Am I in the minority. I have a brother-in-law who feeds his cows grain 365 days a year.

We will bring a couple of buckets of grain out on occassion for the cows. Main reason, so they dont forget about the treat, so when we need them in the corrals, it only takes about 2 minutes. And if I have no grain readily avail, they can be fooled with an empty bucket ;-)

We feed oat hay and they get ground barley as calves and first year heifers. We normally start feeding the cows around the end of October depending if there is snow on the ground or not.
The replacement calves get oat hay, grass, alfalfa, and the barley. Finishing steers get ground barley the last couple of monthe before butchering.
Never feed them when the grass is going good and green.

we grain feed some in the winter when it gets real cold.but mostlly feed to get cows in the corral.

As heifers I use grain to train them. Not enough to make a difference just enough to get the taste for it. I know a lot of people grain their heifers to help them mature faster but it isn't worth the feet problems it can cause in my opinion.
The cows get nothing unless they are in the chute for shots or AI, then they get about 5 pounds of grain.
We feed grass in the summer and alfalfa mix hay in the winter. That's it.
Any beef cow that needs to be fed grain to do her job should be hamburger.
