Went back last night to chute the cow and found him nursing. Udder had milk in it. Little guy is a bag of bones. Looking forward to seeing him fatten up.

On my way to the corral, had to stop to pull a calf. Big footed bastard, I could hardly pick him up. Hope thats the end of large calves this season.

BINGO! Was her name-o!

Now keep em penned a few more days just to be sure! I usually go at least a week after I see that. But sometimes my gut tells me different. Easy for the calf to forget who is his mama. And vice versa after only a couple days.

Good on ya! Nice job. Always love a happy ending!

Funny, the calf I was grafting onto a heifer last year didn't really start to love the calf until I turned them out with the other cows and calves. I had them by themselves for about 3 weeks and in the end she would let it nurse under sufferance mainly when I fed her. In the end I just turfed them out with the herd and thought the calf was at least vigorous enough to pinch milk from other cows but once out with the herd she became a very dedicated mum, probably wanted to show the other cows that she had one too.
But yes Murray you are right I would keep them together a bit longer to strengthen the bond.

I will do that. Good thinking. I was going to cut them loose this morning. May wait a couple more days.

See the yellow tag nursing a calf... thats not her calf. Shes the onto that wouldnt tend to her calf. Seems she has instead decided another is hers.

Noticed yesterday this failed momma was following this calf around. I can only assume the heifer calf is nursing two udders. At least her milk isnt going to waste, I say. Theres my lemonade statement. Lol
