So did they quit selling cattle in your area. You have been rubbing your plethora of grass in everyones face for a while now. When you gonna buy some cows?

Jealous. Mine's dang near burnt up and some in the area already have hay out.

Hay out now! I am going to try something that the forage specialist said to try. Not feeding hay all winter. Make them live off the stockpiled forage. Iwill let you know if it works.

You'd better rethink that buying more cows plan then.

Mine looked like that until about a gazillion grasshoppers began grazing it. Got little or nothing now.
This is the worst I've ever seen em. If they was worth a penny a piece I'd be a billionaire. They are lined up on every strand of barb wire for miles.

Whan I started out with the EXCLAMATION, Hay out now! I was repeating what slick4591 just posted. I wasn't sure if you made your remark based on that misunderstanding. If you did know that, then I know your gave me that advice based on trying the non-hay winter feeding which I believe is what you meant. I just want to be sure.

It will work, but you will have to strip graze it a little at a time. If you just let em have at come Jan.1 they will eat all up in a month or less.

Inyati, What kind of weed is that ....the blue flower with your dog among them? They seem to grow along the highway up here. Whatever they are, cows wont touch them! Thanks...Jason.
Nice pasture too!

I think Dr Ray Smith said that. I can make that work. If I can get through January, I will be on my way to knowing how to plan next year. Thanks Banjo. Good to hear from you. I hope to get down there if I ever figure out how a cattleman doing everything as a one man operation gets away. :D

Chicory. I have been in war with it for two years. They say goats love it.

They can live and you can save lots of money and equipment wear. I made it till March 20th this past winter and if we have the same type winter this year I can make it all winter. This may in time take culling a few cows that dont do well but after only 5 years I feed very little hay.

Kenny, do you do the strip grazing like Banjo mentioned?

Yes and no. I give 75 cows about 5 acres at a time and sometimes more according to the fencing. Strip is even better with smaller numbers.

How many days do you give them on that 5 acres?
