My wife got me a new yellow lab male pup for my birthday about 6 weeks ago. I have a chocolate female that is the finest dog ive ever owned. A friend of mine gave her to my wife and I when we got married and she was already 2 yrs old at the time. I took her dove hunting twice and had her retrieving birds. Problem is that she is about 12 now and hardly gets around. I work with the pup (about 4 mos. old now) nearly every day and I can get him to retrieve a couple of times but then he looses interest. Ive had people tell me that I can take my pup hunting next month and he may begin to pick it up. Then ive had people tell me that he's too young. What do yall think? I may try to take him with my older dog so that he learns a little something but shes gettn pretty old and I don't know if she can do it anymore, she was sure something in her prime though.
 
I think the age really depends on the dog. Spend lots of time with it but don't push it too hard if its not ready or you could set it back. I'd be a little scared to take it dove hunting till it got really interested in retrieving dead birds for fear of making it gun shy.

...you're not the first one with that question. I think there's a thread still on the first page by someone with a 5 month old pup.

(In addition to cows, I also enjoy competition obedience and hunt tests with my Labs and Aussie, and am attempting to work into the field trial world with my new pup.)
 
Set them up for success. As was suggested get them excited about birds before introducing guns. But I start them young.

Like Jo suggested, the bond is everything.

With my pointers, I like to get a wing and put it on a fishing pole and drag around. A lot can accomplished, and a lot of fun can be created for the pup. When they are all worked up, i'll introduce a 22 or cap gun. Dog's are most maleable to socializing and accepting of their environments up to around 18 or so weeks of age. If negative reactions are not reinforced, they will accept more as normal during that time. Gun shots too, just start slow and get them more worried about the bird than the bang. I start messing with wings and fishing pole as soon as i get them, purely fun, not trying to correct anything and just a little time. Start introducing sound around 12 to 14 weeks, and again a real light bang with a lot of fun. Start working on whoa.

What i do not suggest: As a really young pup, I took my current pointer out with a farm raised quail. First time on a live bird, it jump up. She jumped back a little. Only the tracking string tied to the bird wrapped around her leg. Bird came bouncing back at her. She started to run and that bird was chasing her zig for zig and zag for zag. Bad deal.

I knew I had better not end on that note. So we pressed on. Thought for a moment instead of a pointer, she might become the first german shorthair circler. She'd hit the scent of a bird and make the prettiest circle around it. Eventually convinced her that the bird was more scared of her than she it. She became a scraper and has the barbwire and plumb thicket scars to prove it.
 
give him time.......and maybe reconsider the doves. they can ruin a pup with all those loose feathers
