Went to the sale barn yesterday, had a friend who needed a fat steer and offered to pay the fuel if I'd pick one up for him.
With a shortage of sleep, a long drive and a lunch I was a bit tired...dozed off somewhere in the middle of the replacements and woke up enough to see a few light steers being sold and nodded off again until I realized that I still needed that animal.
I even sat down in the order buyers section so I wouldn't miss anything.
Had a big fella in front of me and the ring man in front of him so my view was OK.
Well, I hate to say it but in my brief moments of catching my 40 winks I looked up and saw the scale read-out over the big guy's shoulder...1250#...something clicked and my hand instinctively went up, that's what I was looking for, and I was in the bidding competition with another fella (probably the owner of the animal).
I took the bid and only then did I fully wake up get a real good look at the cow.....oh yeah, cow...looked around the big guy and saw that udder swinging...my hearing got much better and I could make out that I'd bought the cow for 43 bucks a hundred.
A $600.00 lesson on paying attention...and they say that you can't teach a old dog new tricks.
At least it gives me a excuse to go to the sale again in two weeks. Who knows, I may just get that steer for my buddy.
Could have posted this in the most embarassing moments section.
And that's my two bits worth....asked for or not.

awwwwwww come on dave its not a total loss.now you have a weigh cow that you can feed an butcher.im sure you could use some berger meat.bet youll stay awake at the next sale.better yet take susie an youll come home with a trailer load.

That's too funny. Bigbull is right. Give her some feed, put a tad of flesh on her, and grinder up.

Dave, I'm working up the nerve to ask the sale barn manager if I could bring my recliner, sit it in the balcony where the big guys bid. I get the urge to nap often at them big sales. :cowboy:

MM...I just wish they wouldn't put the rows of seats so close together so that a guy could really slide down in the seat and stretch out.

TB i could always get comfy in the seats.just throw my leggs up on the steel pipe.an hope i dont hitt someone upside the head.

I really try to avoid taking the bride to the spring sales...to many calves and she has a soft spot for little Herfs. I have to wait till she leaves to go to the head...left her alone at one sale and got a surprize when went to pay up. Turned out to be a nice little heifer.
The seats at the local barn look like they came from a real old movie theater so us big guys need to leave a seat betwen us or it can get mighty uncomfortable, especially in summer.
All aside, I do like to spend time there, selling or buying or just napping.
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one that nodds off.
