Checked on calf prices at Weston WV Livestock Market for the Oct. 4 sale.

600-700 steers average_____73
600-700 heifers____________59.5
600-700 bulls______________59.5
Can't remember prices being that low for several years. If I didn't have about all I can winter I would be buying.
Fred

Those are about half of what they are running around here. But that was friday, could be down the toilet by today

It will be interesting to see what the Tulsa Stockyard Sale does today. I know the cattle futures dropped about $3 per pound for feeders on Friday.

Wow Fred...that's awful. Hauled a few myself last week....5 weights averages around $.88....had a few 400+ averaged $93. One packer cow weighed 1265 and brought $.52....sold three head of open heifers around 1000 lbs. and averaged $740 by the head. I thought that was bad enough. :cry2:

man the cattle market is in tolit on the light weight calves.makes me glad that we dont sell emm in the 500 to 600 range.i like to sell them in the 800 range.

Those numbers are comparable to here, somewhat lower though. You have to see what's coming through the sale ring to be in full perspective. I've never seen a sorrier array of calves, ever, than what I've been seeing at our stockyard. More animals with pinkeye than without. Rough coats, thin muscle, snotty noses, you name it. Good cattle still sell substantially higher, regardless of color. Prices are still a little higher for blacks than reds of similar quality. One pen of little snot-nosed, rough, black calves might bring .75 while the next pen of slick, healthy reds might bring .94. Purebred herfs are taking the hardest beating. Several 7 weight heifers appearing to be purebred went down into the .57 range. Their steered mates were in the low .70's. Too many variables coming to play at one time here. Severe drought, poor market, and no input/low output producers.

Cattle here are holding up better than other parts of the country- so far
we're just off .4-.09 a lb.
and I am not seeing a big spread for quality.

I wonder if its because we had the drought last year and everyone sold down(supply demand market)-- sales are running up to 1/2 the normal numbers.

If I could find eared cattle at those prices, I'd need a straight jacket.

Are the numbers posted per pound or per head?
Sorry that is per pound. It is an average of the highest and lowest in each group. I sold some about a month ago and they were about half steers and half heifers and they averaged $.92. I got that info off their website. We normaly have a finiky market around here.

Not so bad here, average price for 550 weight steers and heifers is 103.5. Older cows are low though, around 52. good time to buy short term cows.

You got that right. Last week at the sale, there were some really fine cows went through there that were good deals

Price appear to still be pretty good here in Oklahoma.
