I was out checking cows this morning. It was more of a effort to put miles on a young horse than to actually check the cows, but since I was out there I had a good look at them anyways.
The good news was that the horse did quite well.
The bad news was that first off as soon as ol' 106 saw me she took everyone with her when she left. And as I was trying to catch up to them I discovered that one of the newer calves had died. Not sure what happened to it, as it has been really, really hot here for the last week, and there wasn't much left of it. I am thinking that it may have gotten trampled during one of the thunderstorms late last week.
And for more bad news, the old girl that we were hoping would make the summer with her calf is going to have to be put out of her misery sooner than later. Her calf looks OK, but I am sure it isn't getting much from its mama. If we are lucky it is stealing from the heifer that lost the calf. She doesn't look like she is too dried up, so it is a possibility. If not we will bring it in (if we can catch it) and put it with the other orphans.
On the other hand, the cripple calf, is doing quite well. I think it stifled a hip, and it doesn't walk on that leg, but it is getting around. And it's mama IS taking care of it.
Anyone want to explain why the cripple couldn't have been the one that died :mad: :?:
