Getting The Run Around

Those guys we bought the stain, that is now peeling off of our house, are trying to blame us for it and giving us the run around.

I talked to the owner who showed he knows next to nothing about the stain he sold us and the employee who we have been dealing with is saying they will give us enough stain to "touch up" the spots that are peeling.
They tried to tell us that the moisture was too high in the logs. Really? I borrowed their moisture tester. Who are they kidding?

Hubby talked to them today and got the run around too. Told him that the stain rep would be out in 2-3 weeks :shock: :shock: :shock: to look at our house.
Hope Benjamin Moore liked my e-mail tonight.
Ok I was polite, to a point. ;-)

I called our builders, these guys build, stain and chink log homes and have been doing so for a number of years. They said it sounds like the stain had gotten frozen. The store owner said it couldn't freeze because it is an oil base stain. Really? It states water base right on the can.

Not going to get stain from these guys again. Our builders told me a couple different stains they recommend. I'll buy online for the one. These guys said it would take a month to get it. I can get it in a week.

I'm a little bit ticked tonight.

What makes me madder is some friends of ours have a bucket truck they said we could borrow, but they are trying to sell it so we can only borrow it for a few days. I was hoping to strip the stain off this week, but it looks I won't. :bang:

Finally heard back from Benjamin Moore. The bleep on that end had the nerve to tell me I did it all wrong and I was not suppose to put on the fungicide, inseticide treatment because it will keep the stain from bonding with the wood! Nice to flipping know that now. So what is in their stain to prevent these problems? Nothing. You need to strip it off and re-do it EVERY 13 MONTHS!!!!! :shock: :shock: :shock:

On the good side of all of this our new power washer is taking the worse of the stain off, but I'm still pretty ticked.

Found out if I want their stain rep to come out I have to fill out a form to request them to come out. :bang: :bang: :bs: :bs:

HD go check out logfinish.com I have talked to these guys and if they do not know the answer they will say so. They have been more helpful then BM ;-) ever could.

The stain remover I just forked $96 for works somewhat. Found out don't do as the instructions say apply it undiluted and do NOT use the stiff brisheled brush as they say.
It fluffed 2 of our logs!!! :bang: :bang:
Now I get to sand them once they dry out. No I did not have the nozzle of the power washer close to the logs. I was very careful of that.

Sorry to hear about your staining disaster! The photos look like y'all used a waterbased "solid color" stain. In 20/20 hindsite...you should probably use an "oil based penetrating stain" (after the old stain has been blasted off).

The solid color "surface type" stains can be problematic and tend to require repeats, even if oil-based.

You might want to re-do with either Valspar or Behr stains (do your own research...I'm not an "expert" but have done quite a bit of painting, staining in my lifetime...lol).

The bleep at the customer service told me we voided our warranty because we used the Board Defense on our logs.
This was new construction. We just started it last year. Stain was on for only 7 months.
Going with TWP as suggested by our builder.

Did more research and we are going to get crushed glass and media blast the walls to clean them off. I ordered a wood restorer to use on them as soon as I get this junk off. Forked out $565 so far and going to have to fork out around another $607 on stain and sealant. No idea on how much glass we are going to need so no price on that yet.
I hate saying this but I hope our friends do not sell their bucket truck too soon.

Sometime ago I read where "sandblaster equipment" also used pulverized pecan or walnut shells in fine particles for cleaning surfaces, as well as fine particle sand.

Been doing alot of searching, talking and watching about this and the guys said do not use sand, but glass or corn cob. Don't know if any of them have tried pecan or walnut. Might be hard to get up here.

Best laugh I have had in days.
Got contacted by another customer service guy today. Talked with him.
He tried to blame us concerning the peeling too. Then he got stupid and told me, "We have had no complaints concerning this stain peeling."
I about fell out of my chair as I started to laugh. asked him if he has done a search on the internet concerning this stain. He said no. I told him he really needed to because I found tons of complaints from people about it peeling in less then 6 months.
I just kept laughing. don't care if I offended him or not.

ILH...Sorry you're still getting so much crap from these people....
they're just making this bleep :bs: up as they go along. There is nothing in the Board Defense that would be barrier forming to prevent adhesion or penetration of a quality product. What they are unwilling to tell you is that the adhesion problem stems from the poor quality of their acrylic solids combined with the texture & porosity (inconsistant closed grain) of logs. The manufacturers won't tell people that waterborne products are generally incompatible with logs. They won't penetrate properly, because water molecules would rather bond with each other rather than a pigment particle and don't deeply penetrate a surface. So they add acrylic binders to bond to the pigment particles. The acrylics are barrier forming, but still won't penetrate most surfaces very deep.
Since the product label specifically states that it can be used on new, pressure treated lumber, I would ask them to show you where, precisely (and why, since some treatments are borates), their warranty expressly prohibits the use of boric acid/borate derivitive products prior to staining.

Unfortunately, even if you get them to cave in and admit to their problem, I'm sure that the warranty also limits their liability to the original cost of the product. But if you have the stomach for it, it might still be worth pursuing.

Ok Update!

We go into court on Monday. Just asking for the cost of media blasting.
Filed a complaint with our states consumer protection and got a copy of the letter BM sent them.
Same old BS of blaming the Board Defense kept the stain from penetrating. The logs were wet. There was extreme heat when the stain was appiled. More BS.

What really got me was their "claim" that their representative came out and investigated it. Really? If they came out without notifying us and we were gone then that is tresspassing.

Kingfisher that is what was in their letter. The Judge will get all the letters and e-mails.

Bigbull doing alot of research. I got info that will refute their claim about several things.
Got all the dates of the pictures and so much more stuff that it is unreal.
Think I need a large folder right now. The manilla envelope I started with is about bursting.
