Friday moring I'm driving over 4hrs to the Markes Family Farms in Oklahoma to check out their Gelbvieh bulls. They have an offering of over 60 bulls. I've convinced my grandpa to ride along as he could potentially be in the market too. Here is a link to their Herd sires: http://www.markesfamilyfarms.com/2.htm I have never used a Gelbvieh bull but after researching the breed, I think it might have somethin to offer my brangus girls by cleaning up their calves underlines a bit. My grandpa also has ~60 average type commercial cows that I think Gelbvieh bulls would add some pounds too and also add some maternal traits to the mix. I'm not an EPD scholar but I am looking for a bull with moderate bw(<80lbs) and a strong WW. My grandpa would be looking for somewhat the same except he is set on keeping his "best" heifers regardless of market conditions so maternal traits play a bit more importance in his selection although his operations would still be predominately terminal.
Of the sires listed in the link, which ones do you feel best meet the criteria I'm looking for. Also, any insight on the pedigree of these bulls in relationship to that of the breed as a whole would be much appreciated.

If all you're looking for is a low birthweight bull to clean up the underline there are pureblood brangus bulls that will do this quickly.

The Lieutenant Governor bull and the Ozzie bull are both going to be pretty maternal and both have excellant calving ease. In fact their current EPD's are better than the listed epd's. Without seeing the epd's on the dams of any of their calves it's hard to say but with those two you get the best of John Oswalds program.

Obviously it would matter a lot what they were bred to. I have seen some pictures of the Markes heifers and they looked OK but without being there in person it's hard to say what their bull calves will look like. If I remember correctly they don't go overboard finishing their sale cattle so you should see a real world product when you get there.

Take a look at his calves, some of his herd sires bring alot to the table. My focus is on a bull with good WW, YW, MK and TM around 40. MK 16 or better YW around 75 or better WW 40 or better. Make him show you his cowherd. If it was me I would not buy a bull from him unless I liked the cow it was out of. Especially if you are looking for a maternal bull. She better have most if not all the tools you want in his dtrs.

The Ozzie bull goes back to Ideal182 and he is as maternal as they come.

We ended up buying two bulls. MIne out of Lieutenant Governor and my Grandpas out of Markes Matombo 809R. Both bulls are out of Ozz Hollis cows. I let the LG bull in with 9 heifers this afternoon and he seemed to settle in just fine. I am really pleased with this bulls dispositon. I can almost get him to come up to a feed bucket. As I think was said, the bulls weren't in the condition I'de have my sale bulls in, but after seeing 2 of the 26 month old bulls he still had, I'm confident a little feed will help fill mine out a bit. I will post pictures and EPDs as soon as I get the papers in the mail. My grandpa has 10 cows out of the Blonde Bull I bought from him that are exceptional. I can't wait to see their calves from the Matombo bull. Again, thank you all for your inputs.

Since Mutombo is out of OZZHollis then he bought a bull out of a brother sister mating? If so did you deel like it was a good mating. I m not critisizing just asking.

Correction: The bull that my grandpa bought is a Diamond Fortune ET S46 son and out of an Ozz Hollis cow. My bull is out of Lieutenant Governor and a cow sired by Ozzie 47P. I will have pictures by the weekend. Have a good week!

Thanks. He's been getting about 5lbs of 14%creep each day and in a real good pasture. Hopefully that will put some weight on him while he's doin work. I don't plan on having him in the heifer pen (20acres) later than the end of August. Hopefully they will have all bred by then and be calving no later than June 1. I don't like summer calves but I plan on holding them till mid Jan '12 to rebreed them as fall calvers. These are 9 heifers I kept out of a Brangus bull I had running with my cows before I traded for the Blonde bull. 9 of 11 of my first '09 calves were heifers from this Brangus bull and the rest of 09' from the Blonde. I traded my gpa back so all of my '10 calves are from this bull and most are bred back to him except the 9 Heifers that are with the Gelbvieh, Trivette. (Walker Texas Ranger)

Act BW was 75lbs Adj WW 612 and Adj YW of 748. ~5 months with ~136lbs of gain?? Its amazing what 5 weeks on some good coastal will do for a bull. He's starting to fill out and I wouldn't doubt he'd already gained close to a 100lbs. The grass he had been on in NW OK has to be lacking something because it was knee high and plentiful yet there were a pasture full of thin bulls. My bermuda is 8-10 inches and getting shorter every day w/ no rain but its already bone wonders for this animal.

Great pedigree. I am at John Oswalds right now picking up some heifers and saw some real good sons of the
Govenor bull this morning. He has a red grandson of the Cha Michell cow here that will wean 750lbs next week that I want real bad.
