Just heard today that the champion of champions at the huge Beef 2006 Cattle exhibition in Rockhampton Queensland. 2,000 head of 34 breeds exhibited,was a Gelbvieh bull 23 months of age weighing 1045 kgs. This bull was 5th in the interbreed at the Royal Queensland show in Brisbane last year. He is a beautiful soft well fleshed bull,his eye muscle area was 139 cm. Thats pretty good. The breeder is about 160 ks away from us (100 miles) We've got some Gelbvieh South Devon blood cattle thay have done very well for us. Good milkers.

awesome... I bet the owners were sure proud... Champion of Champions and over 2000 head exhibited... I sure don't envy the judge(s)...

Talking to a cattleman last night about the Gelbvieh bulls win at Beef 2006. Apparently it caused a lot of controversy. He reckoned there were 20 other bulls better than him. Thats the way it goes. I was beaten for the interbreed bull at a local show with my good big polled South Devon bull earlier this year. He was beaten by a 15 month old Hereford. I was dissappointed but I could see the young bull was as good. Both judges (one bred Herefords the other Angus) were swapping breed wins in the interbreeds all day. The only stranglehold that was broken was a good Charolais cow with calf at foot who won the supreme female award. One of the two judges whispered to me "you have the best bull on the grounds" I said why didn't he win then? No reply.

As a US Gelbvieh breeder, this is awesome to hear! We sold some cattle and embryo's over to Australia a few years ago, so I'd be real interested to see the pedigree on that bull if anyone knows where to find it. In fact, two of the animals we sold over there won surpreme at Queensland and Sydney (they might be seperate shows for all of my knowledge of Australia).

I bet that is pretty cool to see some of your breeding doing so well, or part of what is doing so well, in another part of the world. Can't really see a whole lot of the bull, but he looks good from what I can tell.

The (ET) after the various animals names represents embryo transfer... I presume these are the animals klintdog is referring to that stem back to his herd. There are American and Canadian animals in the bull's pedigree within 3 generations... I wouldn't call that far back. If they're close enough to show on the pedigree, well....
 
You seem to have an assortment of breeds TTCLM.... where do you keep them all and how do you manage them??
 
THE EXCLUSIVE BULL HAS AWESOME EPDS BUT THE PHENOTYPE IS KIND OF DISAPPOINTING. FROM THE CALVES I HAVE SEEN OUT OF HIM THE MUSCLE IS JUST AVERAGE AT BEST SO I SUSPECT THE HIGH GROWTH COMES FROM ABOVE AVERAGE FRAME SIZE. A LOT OF THEM ARE A LITTLE SICKLE HOCKED AND COW HOCKED. IF YOU HAVE SOME THICK, MODERATE, GOOD LEGGED COWS HE WILL WORK. THERE IS A SON CALLED GOVERNOR THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY CALVES OUT OF BUT HIS PICTURE LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. CATTLEMENS CONNECTION HAS HIM.

I HAVE A LOT OF EXTRA IN OUR HERD. WE USED HIM ON SEVERAL FLUSHES AND USED 2 SONS AS HERDSIRES. EXTRA IS PRETTY SMALL SO HE WORKS WELL ON BIG GROWTHY COWS. STRUCTURE WAS PRETTY GOOD ON OURS AND THE UDDER QUALITY IS GOOD. THERE ARE SOME SONS OUT THERE THAT WILL GIVE YOU MORE MUSCLE AND GROWTH THAN HE WILL.
 
hey jnowak, you're not Jared are you? I think we're ran into each other a couple times down in Denver.

In regards to which portion of the animal came from our herd, if you look at the maternal granddam you'll Double J Polly who is out of Double J Grizzly and Double J Maddie, both ET calves. Double J Grizzly is one of the embryo's that we sold over there. We purchased his sire DBC Grizzle Bear from Mick McCarty out of Cody, WY a while back. He was a heck of a bull for us back in the early 90's. The reason it's showing Canada is because of where the embryo's were harvested. We had to import everything into Canada first and then they went to NSW from there. Hope that clears everything up.

If you're looking for a black bull, I'd shy away from Exclusive and Extra. We're using Extra Exposure, Carolina Fortune, and Fighting Irish this year. Fighting Irish is a bull I raised that won his division down in Denver 2 years ago. Here's a picture:

Double J is the premier breeder in NSW. Amongst few that promote the breed here in our state. There is about 10 breeders in all of Australia that really promote the breed. Norolle & Glen Isa in Queensland do a good job,Ebony Lodge in Victoria. at last one in South Australia and one or two in Western Australia.Others in NSW are Birubi and Kensal. We had a prolific promoter of the breed about 8 kilometres from us but the gloss has gone of the breed for some reason. These people had a big fancy truck that could fit about 20 head in. It had their stud signs painted along the side of it. It really stood out at shows.
They now breed Gelgus (Angus/Gelbvieh).

Do you remember a Sullivan Farms from NSW? They were the ones that put the whole US buying trip together when they were over in the US. The went through North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Canada and put together an awesome group of cattle to import into Aus. I noticed that they're no longer listed on the membership page of the Aus Gelbvieh Assoc, so I was wondering what happened to them.
 
Well that would explain why we haven't heard anything from them lately. They would have been over here in around 95 or so when they put their group together. You don't happen to know the pedigree of that cow you bought from them do you? I'm really curious now!
