These are nice pictures, Dave. My favorite is the seventh one down.

We have never seen bare ground this late in the year on our ranch. The dry summer we had didn't leave much green in the grass they are living on. They have access to 18% tubs and will get one last round of them on Thursday. After that we will start stringing pellets out at 5 lbs per head.
Any that need extra help will be gathered as needed. Would be nice to not be rolling hay out for another month but time will tell.

Tim,

Those are not mineral tubs. Probably zero Salt. He said he is supplementing with 18 % tubs. That would be protein and maybe carbohydrates.

The mineral is our custom mix, mixed 50/50 with salt.


We put the 18% tubs out 24 at a time to last a week.

Yes, it isn't hard for them to turn into welfare recipients. There isn't much in the grass they are on now. Our dry summer turned most of it yellow to the roots. Thinking after next Thursday, (last cattle sale this year) The Pellet Puker will be mounted on the truck and they will start getting about 6 lbs of pellets per day. We did put out another round of tubs today. Took some photos and will ask Ron to add them to this post.

The reason I ask is because Fire Sweep has poor hay this winter and they are using a tub that also provides a high level of FAT in addition to protein. I wonder if you need calories in your climate.

All living things need some calories. Our hay and a few pounds of screenings pellets have them looking pretty good most years by calving. The ability to freight different requirements as needed has greatly changed how cattle are managed here.
