Gate Opening

I'm putting up new fence around a wooded area. I want to put in a gate so that we can get all the machinery through. So I want 2 12 foot gates and I'm not buying them til they go on sale.
What is the measurement so that the gates work with out letting the cattle get out?

A 12 foot gate is actually 11 1/2 feet for a 12 foot opening.

And if using the screw in "L" hinge pins, I allow 2-3" from the face of the post for those--which should come under the missing 6" in the measurement Dun stated.

If it's not a gate that's going to get used very often then why not just a wire gate?
