One of the local issues is the Interstate runs right past our little town. We have no gas station. In fact it is about 80 miles from Ontario (Not Canada) to Baker City. There is no gas station between the two. Every week 2, 3, 4 people pull in here because they are out of gas. Two guy who live right by the freeway keep gas on hand. One charges $5 a gallon, the other $8. So a week or so ago one of the ladies saw two tricked out Harleys parked in town. She stopped and ask how things were going. One was dead out of gas. They were on their way to Seattle to some big time charity ride that will eventually end in Florida. She told them that she would get them some gas, which she ran home and came back with some. She was driving an old beater Datsun 4x4. To say that pickup has seen its better days would be an understatement. They own a ranch. She works on the ranch. I would be pretty certain she wasn't cleaned up. Anyway after she gave them the gas the guy handed her $100. I am sure that between that old pickup, her appearance, and the old falling down houses where they were parked, that the biker thought she was dirt poor. Her Husband and her have a pretty good size ranch. They are far from poor.
I am now telling my wife that when I dress in old ratty cloths that I am trying to look poor in case someone wants to give me $100 for a couple gallons of gas.
She refused the money. They wouldn't hear of it. She donated it to the charity that they were riding for.

Yes that is the one. But I wish they had come up here looking for gas. Heck, I would have filled them up for $100.

3 gals fillup for $100? Heck of a deal Dave!!
TT'd be proud of ya.

I have them stop here out of gas. They come in and camp or hike in the National Forest thinking they can get to the County Seat for gas when the creek is up.

There is a little sign as you pass the last exit in Ontario that says next services 80 miles. And I do mean it is a little sign. I spotted it but I was looking for it. No sign on the Baker City end. Mostly we get city people who are used to a gas station on every other street corner. Trouble is that here it is a long ways between street corners.

A mini van ran out of gas close to the house. I had 5 gallons in the gas can. I drove it to them. They used my entire 5 gallons and drove off. Now I am out of gas in that gas can. And I am out 5 gallons of gas and had to go to town to refill.

Why do people not just take a gallon ?

Probably didn't offer to pay you for it either.
Them's the kind of people you kinda wish there was a little water in the bottom of the can...kinda.
(As my ol granny used to tell me..."you'll get your reward in Heaven"..)

thats a nice saying.

Had one run out in front of my house a few years ago. Midnight. Knocked on my door. I knew him well. Pretty lazy. And fairly drunk. But not a bad feller. Said he needed gas. Told him I didn’t have any. Asked if I could take him to get some. I said yes. He didn’t have a jug. So I got one. Went to store. Pumped 5 gallons. Guess what? He didn’t have any money. I paid for it. Told him if he didn’t bring me a 20 spot back not to come back again. Bout a week later he showed up with my Jackson. Most of the time that ends up being charity. Or bought experience, depending on how one looks at it.
