I paying more and running a Diesle. When I hook to something I want to pull it whenever and wherever I want to go at the speed and in any heat.

When I first got my diesel, the most common reasoning behind a diesel was for those who are towing consistently.

That is the key factor. If your truck and trailer are never separate, it should be a diesel. Otherwise, a gas job would be cheaper in the long haul both in repairs and initial value.

People say the diesels hold their value better, but after 200,000 miles, their value drops like a rock too. You don't see too many 300,000 mile 3/4 and 1 ton diesels fetching big bucks. They might be worth a couple thousand more over a comparable gas job, but you need that extra cash to pay for the much more expensive initial cost of the diesel motor.

My gas and diesel trucks get the same mileage. I usually only use the diesel for towing/heavy work. I've now laid up my gasser until it's cheaper to drive then the diesel

I hear the 6.2 gas 4x4 @ 12-13 mpg
6.7 diesel 4x4 @ 17-18 mpg

Cross_7 a diesel truck is expensive to buy and own. Air cleaner and fuel filter cost 4 times as much as a gas. And an oil filter cost twice as much as a gas truck and the diesel engine holds 3 times as much oil. I have a 2011 model year Ram 3500 and it only gets 15mpg. My brother has a 2011 1/2 ton GM pickup and gets 19mph average. If your going to pull over 10k you need a diesel truck. I feel like a dummy driving my 3500 Ram diesel without a trailer hooked to the back. A gas engine will last 200k miles now.

Well the power is better with most diesels, the mileage is better with a diesel. And around here diesel is 40 cents a gallon cheaper. The new smaller diesel coming out in the half ton dodge trucks should be a big deal this year, with it supposed to get 25+ mpg and diesel being 20 to 40 cents cheaper.

Yes, the diesel being cheaper has just been a recent trend though, in the last few weeks. Will it stay that way? I do not think so.
We bought our diesel in 2004, when it was consistently cheaper than gas. That was a really big reason for buying it, along with the towing capacity. Soon after, diesel shot up, and has sense ALWAYS been more expensive than gas. The repairs on the diesel are high, and our truck has close to 300 k miles on it, so repairs yearly are several thousand dollars. When we get ready to buy a replacement truck, we are going gas. But our truck is not constantly hooked to the trailer either...

We have both and when the price of diesel is less then gas I switch trucks. Prefer some things about the diesel (it's 8 years newer so has more bells and whistles) But I really like the old gas truck, smaller and more manueverable.

diesel aint practical anymore. if you dont haul regular....initial cost of the trucks , to much to maintain on them nowdays. to keep emissions down. epa keeping diesel fuel prices higher than regular. putting the little truckers out of business...

I have explained this 10,000 time's.
It is about BTU's a gallon of diesel weigh's 7.5 pound's roughly with 160,000 BTU's per gallon.
Gasoline weigh's 6 pound's per gallon and roughly 125,000 BTU's per gallon depending on blend.
To get 30 pound's of fuel you have to purchase 4 gallon's of diesel versus 5 gallon's of gasoline.
You get 640,000 BTU's in 30 pounds of diesel versus 625,000 BTU's out of 30 pound's of gasoline.
We have had the technology to convert diesel to gasoline through catalytic cracking process since WWII.
In refining this is called fluffing the barrel this is the reason fuel is sold per gallon versus per pound.
Typically by fluffing the barrel a complex refinery can produce 20% more output over input.
You still have a 100 pound's in and out but you have converted 100 barrel's to 120 barrels through cracking and hydrogen uptake.
Diesel is still cheaper to purchase in pound's of energy(BTU's) vesus gasoline.
Edit gasoline cost roughly .58 a pound versus diesel .53 if I did the math right 3.50 a gallon divide by 6 versus 4 dollar's divided by 7.5.

You gotta be kidding. Gas is $3.19 a gallon here in Tennessee and we're not known for having the cheapest gas in the nation.

3.21 here.. and on road diesel around 3.85 or so.. but its time for me to cut hay, so it and off road, should be over 4 dollars in a few days...

I'm trying to decide on the same. I'm buying used and trading in. Diesels everywhere on the lots. Gas burners are hard to find.

if i was going to drive an pull alot it would be diesel.i would never buy a gas truck unless it was never used for pulling.a friend just bought a diesel dodge 1 ton.we put his 16ft gooseneck cattle trailer on it with 4 1100lb heifers in it.went to the vet going 60 or 65 an was getting 19mpg.then went an loaded 3 more 900lb heifers an got 19mpg all the way home.so what does that tell you.

That his Dodge does better on diesel than my Lexus RX 350 does on gas.
