Frost Free Nose Pump

Help Support CattleToday:

I have seen lots of nose pumps. They work OK in the right place, although they are not as maintenance free as the sellers would like to claim. This is the first I have hear of a frost free nose pump. I am skeptical. Nose pumps work because there is a quart or so of water in the back of the bowl. When the cow tries to reach that water they push in on the pump giving themselves more water. They soon learn to push on the pump with their nose. So what happens when the water in the bowl freezes? It is exposed to the elimates and it is only a quart or so of water. Is it frost free at 31 degrees or does it still work a t -31 degrees. The nose pumps I have seen the cows spill as much water as they drink. So do you end up with a skating rink around the waterer? It might work but I would have to see it.
