I bought a feeder heifer that I suspect is a freemarten. That in itself doesn't bother me since she is a feeder. However, all the steers ride her nonstop. Is there anything hormonal I can implant or inject to stop this nonsense, or must I separate her?

Is this a feeder for you or a commercial venture?

In either case do you really want an additional bill for a spay job? Really bites into the black numbers. Heck drugs do the same.

For you and your freezer .....

Personally I would not spend a dime of time or money on her - ship her or separate.

Commercial venture?

Profit is everything - and profit is thin at the best of times - and that means ALL additions - including time, drugs, yardage etc MUST be factored in. Anything added to your expense column means less money and perhaps even a loss. If the animal is not a perfect fit ....... you stand to lose.

Ship her.

This is a commercial venture. I will probably just separate the few heifers and feed them separately. I suspect her hormonal problems are also making her grow. She's really puttin' it on and I expect to make more on her than any other animal. I only paid $165 dollars for her about 6 weeks ago and she'll probably bring $450 or so in the spring, even if prices remain low.
