Freeganism

My FIL has always done this. He'll scrounge anything and resell it. I believe that he and his GF make a pretty good living that way. He's a state retiree but he will buy anything to resell at a profit. Beats all I ever saw. You should see his house. Between the junk and all her relatives living in that house, it's pretty disgusting. You have to step over people when you visit. All sitting on the porch with nothing to do but wait on the old man to die.

And it will be a big mess when he does. :|

I think the whole thought is they feel they are getting something for free.Like searching to find what kinda prize they can get.Like I think jo mentioned I knew a guy who searched all the dumpsters and would take his good stuff and set up at the flea mkt.
Also know a guy who drives one of those dumpster trucks in St.Louis and picks up at the walmarts, lowes, sams and those kind of places. He has a second hand store and makes real good money on their throwaway's. Seen him have brand new rider mowers for sale before that runs good but slightly damaged. He will take a couple damaged ones and make one good one and have extra parts for sale.
He told me one time that working his job is like having christmas everyday.

When I worked for Target, we would crush everything before it went in the dumpster. We didn't want the liability of someone falling in a dumpster and not getting out or following the garbage truck to the dump and getting hurt. Walmart doesn't like it when you get into their dumpsters. I know some people who do find interesting stuff dumpster diving and they will take food if it is still packaged. There was a chip distributor that used to throw all their outdated chips in the dumpster knowing that people "shop" there.

I've known people who found jewlery in dumpsters. Diamond rings and watches. Who knows? I've never been that cuious. I did get in the dumpster once when I discovered I'd thrown my paycheck away...

there use too be a man we called jughead, that hit all the dumpsters. we shared one with the bank he was down in it digging around when a bank lady threw a bag in on him he jumps up and hollars, i think she may have pee'd on her self :P

Once found two kids in the dumpster where I used to work. They hadn't been dumped, they were just playing around. They could have gotten killed when the trash truck came, though. We put dirty adult diapers in that dumpster!!!

It wasn't the best neighborhood. Had to chase hookers off the parking lot more than once. We had a flop motel next door. Used to be a nice place but fell into disrepair along with the rest of Clebrune. It's all been redeveloped now. What was the training center is now a restaurant. If those patrons only knew what kinds of unholy messes we used to make in there...

A number of years ago when I went to school in Kalamazoo (no Elvis sightings while I was there), there were a large number of bums that would ride around on bicycles collecting the bottles and cans (Michigan has a .10 bottle deposit) from the parties of the college kids. One early Sunday morning I was driving downtown and there was a shiny new bright red moped just ahead of me speeding along the road. However there was a trenchcoat flapping in the breeze and a knit cap just like all the other bums had. When I got close I saw baskets overflowing with bottles on the moped and sure enough it was one of the bums. I figured he had invested his "earnings" wisely and bought himself a moped to cover his territory just a little faster than the others who were stuck riding their bicycles around. I never forgot that lesson, though I did forget most of the other stuff I learned in college :lol2:

Lammie...you added to the problem. Chase'em off they have to dig thru dumpsters...or move to another part of town and raise prices to make up for lost business.

On a serious note...we took several from a youth group and had them participate in a "homeless exercise" quite a few years ago. They were never in danger of starving but did sleep part of the night under a bridge or a vacant building and had nothing to eat.....it was an eye opener for them.
