found cattle

Tuesday evening I received a call from my neighbor, he said that a state trooper came by and said that there were three young " cows " out and leaving pies on the concrete at a road side park. Leonard said that he did not have any cows but maybe they belonged to his neighbor to the north of him. About thirty minutes later the trooper returned and said that the cows must be his neighbor to the south. Well that is me, so I get a call from the trooper and he was not very polite. He said MY cows were out and come and take care of the problem. I do have cows but my fences are in great shape and I regularly check them. Okay I know stuff happens so I drive the 117 miles to my farm and there are three really nice looking 400 to 500 lb. cows. They are not mine. I call the trooper and he drives out and is a real ****. His first words were " there are laws about loose cows and if someone hits them I would be liable". Well after a few heated words he came to realize they were not my cattle. I told him I could lure them in to a back area and he could find out who owned them. He said he was finished and now they were my problem. I spent the next day going farm to farm and no one claims them. I am telling you these are reall nice looking angus cross cattle. Two heifers and one young bull. I put a notice at the sale barn and both feed store. Does anyone have any other advise.

After the last flood there were a bunch running up and down the Brazos. They came into my bottome pasture once when the gate was open so I shut it. Some were calm and some were not. Some jumped the fences. It took a while to get them all back where they belonged. One steer went to a neighbor's place across the back fence and I am not sure what happened with him.

There are still a couple of really wild fence jumpers you see from time to time running on the river.

In AZ if they aren't branded they're either yours or the state's, depending on who pens 'em, I guess.

Sounds like you've done about all you can do which would mean that the trooper - though and arse - is right. They are your cattle till someone claims them.

A couple of years ago we had four running around for about a year. They looked like 4-h show calves. Beautiful animals. One, a nice bull, ended up being hit by a car in front of a friend's house and the other three just wandered around for months. Don't know who ever claimed them or what happened to them. I sure would have liked to had them.

I got a real nice black baldy hfr about 900lbs several yrs ago a neighbor turned her in my pasture as she was standing near my gate, I called the two neighbors that had cattle and it wasn't either of theirs so she had to travel at least 3 miles to get to my place kept her for over a yr and got a calf out of her
she just had 1 problem whenever you would move the cows to another pasture she would jump the fence and go back to where she had been after this happening a couple time she got wheels under her

My mom had a mystery heifer wander in one time. Black with an ear tag. Called the sheriff, called all her neighbors, put an ad in the paper, nobody claimed her. She was bred, too, had a heifer calf the next spring. Mom ended up giving them to her brother in law to keep a few acres mowed down. Nice quiet cow, she never went thru a fence or tried to escape again.
