Every year this time of year, my cattle especially calves start getting what I assume is foot rot. A light case will have a cow or calf swelling just at the hairline above the hoof, usually a back foot. Sometimes itll bust and pus will come out, sometimes theyll get fever and get plum sick and I end up having to give antibiotics to get them over it. Could this be a management thing? Seems odd to me it happens to several head Every year. Maybe standing around in the pond? They also are running on old clearcut ground so we thought maybe stops jabbing between the toe? Maybe I need a better mineral? I don't know but I'd sure appreciate some suggestions.

Ours seem worst if we have a good growing year (not this year for us) with a lot of weeds. After the weeds cure out and they start stepping on broken weed stubs it causes scratches and worse between their toes and around the hairline and that seems to be where cases get started. Also going from standing in water to dry uplands daily will help the bacteria get going as well. We vaccinate the bulls against it and it seems to work.

I did not know there was a vaccination available. Thank you.

Question about the CTC mineral. We treated a cow yesterday for what I believe to be an early stage of foot rot.
We typically don't have a lot issues with foot rot maybe 5 that I can remember over the course of 30 years.
We do however have bouts of pinkeye. Some years not much and much worse than others. This year it's started very early and we've treated several already.
Will the CTC help with that?
We are using a co op IGR mineral currently and we're asked yesterday when getting more if we wanted medicated or the regular version.
How does the CTC RX work? Can you get an RX for per ton or season or do you have to get one for every purchase?
We typically just stop in and get 5-6 bags of mineral at a time that lasts a week or so.

My vet does the annual "farm visit" when she's out to BANGS/pelvic measure my heifers, which basically consists of clarifying how many head/pairs. But we have a long-standing relationship with our vet, so she doesn't need to literally go through the herd. I get the original VFD and my vet faxes it to the Co-Op. There is no limit on how many bags I purchase but the VFD is valid for 183 days at 6000.0 g/ton.

Another option would be getting a VFD for Aureomycin/CTC in a pellet form.

Do you vaccinate for pinkeye? The CTC should help treating but not preventing, same as with foot rot and anaplas.

We vaccinated the calves with a combined black leg and pinkeye vaccine.
I know it would be better to use a vaccine specifically made for our area but haven't looked into that yet.
We use fly tags and IGR mineral.
Our vet is here once a year at least and we go to his office for things through out the year, so we have a long-standing working relationship.
I'm kind of concerned about Anaplasmosis too in recent years several cases have come up in friends herds throughout the area.

Proper amounts of iodine will help and/or prevent real hoof rot and any hoof health problems. Are your cows grazing KY31 fescue?
Yes I have quite a bit of fescue. Seems my dad used to call what I have fescue foot. But I don't ever remember getting it as bad as I do on this one particular place

Depending on the genetics in the herd, you can have no reaction or reactions up to death: tails fall off, hooves fall off... The better minerals: adequate iodine, selenium, copper, zinc plus "fescue genetics" can make most of that go away. Or it did here. You might also have some foot rot organism there that is adding to it. But it is likely multiple issues coming together to create a storm.

I believe Newport Labs is who my vet goes through to get an autogenous pinkeye vaccine. The one I currently use protects against Moxarella Bovis, Moxarella Bovoculi and Mycoplasma Bovis. This area of KS was hit hard with pinkeye a few years ago, before they added Mycoplasma Bovis. Most generic pinkeye vaccines, including combos, target only Moxarella Bovis. But that is the most prevalent strain, so . . . .

Anaplas is a huge concern around here, especially this year. My vet even increased the Nexguard Plus for my dogs to every 2-3 weeks instead of once a month because it just wasn't effective this year for the prescribed duration. There is a vaccine for cattle, but I've heard mixed results. And up until a few years ago, the vaccine was only available in certain states with a high tick population. The mineral with CTC is only as good as the amount they consume but that and diligent spraying is my best defense. I've had a few cases of anaplas over the years and as long as you catch it early and aggressively treat with LA300 or Baytril 100-CA1, they can make a full recovery. They'll always be seropositive but otherwise fine. I even kept a heifer from an anaplas cow. She's now 4 with her 3rd calf and perfectly healthy.

Thanks for that information, I'll be looking into a pinkeye vaccine like that.
I'm becoming increasingly worried about Anaplasmosis, as it is getting more of a presence here over the last several years.
