Foot Rot Vaccine

Has anyone tried Fusogard from Novartis? It protects cattle from infections of the foot by the genus Fusobacterium causing the condition called foot rot.

I used it for a few years. It's 2 shots 3 weeks apart. One year I only gave it once and it was a waste of time. Pretty certain it cut down the footrot when done right though. But their are multiple organisms that cause footrot, so it may not help either.

I didn't use it this year. Dry year and massive problem with footrot. Never needled so many animals for it ever. But neighbour said, that the vet said, this wasn't a common strain this year.

I went many years without a case of footrot and then one fall it hit really hard. That was 3 years ago and have been vaccinating since and haven't had another case. But I'm not sure if it is coincidence or the vaccine is actually working. A neighbor had a few cases this summer so I was glad I vaccinated. But I also started using a mineral with a low dose of antibiotic and mixing in 1/2 pound of organic iodine per bag also. I've been debating not vaccinating for it this spring though.

And the first year you need the booster in 3 weeks but after that it is a yearly booster if I'm not mistaken.

Aaron, what do you use up there for foot rot. I use LA-200.

Noromycin LA. Any long-acting Oxytetracycline is what you want. I've recently start using a 300mg Oxytet, rather than the standard 200mg to cut down the dosage and amount of needling. I want one shot and one shot only.

Honestly, long-acting oxytetracycline is the only antibiotic I keep in stock. So many cattle ailments are susceptible to it, that most others aren't worth the hassle. If I needed something stronger, I'd let the vet come out and give it, would save me lots of money over buying an entire bottle. Best of all, oxytet is cheap.

Don't know about the vaccine, and haven't had much of a problem with it, but when we do we have a bottle of LYSOL (old school glass bottle) and iodine mix we put in a pump up sprayer. We just happen to use the sprayer that the show pig guys use to wet their hogs. Don't know why but it works for us!

Have to bookmark and maybe even print off and frame this statement. And I will make it even worse and say Knersie is right about the zinc and iodine.
