I mentioned this in another thread but here is a pic from the 360 camera at our place. My brother and I were on the phone and looking at the cattle.



We havent sprayed the cows for flies in at least 3 months. We also don't have mosquitoes. I cropped the pic but this place has a lot of weeds and has water standing there in the pens and other spots.

This is also the place we see the sky will be just full of dragon flies.

We are trying to get some help from some one to confirm what is actually keeping the flies away. The flies and mosquitoes off the charts most places around us right now. Even our other places have them pretty good.

They make fake dragonflies to keep flies and other pests away from your porch or deck.

I seen somewhere that clipping your pastures hurts your dragonfly population because they like taller grass to land on. And dragonflies keep flies and mosquitoes down. I seen a video where one person left strips of taller grass for the dragonflies to help with fly problems

I had a section of pasture one time that was a solid stand of ironweed and I hadn’t got to it for awhile. We’re talking you couldn't see nothing but purple it was that thick.

I mowed it down one day and the amount of dragonflies coming out was nothing short of biblical plague type of thing. I have a neighbor whose house is maybe 30 feet from this and as I am mowing in my cab tractor staring at this in amazement, I notice the neighbors door is open as it always was when it was nice out..I’d hate to imagine how many of these things flew into their house.

They never said anything but I would guess it got a bit chaotic in there for a little bit.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you just left a few acres on your property and let it keep those polinator plants and tall weeds. Would it support enough dragonflies and things to keep the flies on your property down?

With the screw worm fly right now... I bet it would be real nice to have a swarm of dragonflies on your property.

Fly control is a real and noticeable cost for us. If it worked I could put a value to an acre vs what we are spending on flies. Flies also equate to pounds and ultimately dollars.

I would gladly let mother take on that task vs us.

Oh i have more than a few acres of weeds at all times. Lol. I gave up fighting everything and now moving towards finding something that eats them. I would rather at it as forage and produce a product from it instead of spending time and money fighting it. I guess one could say that fighting it will produce more forage for the cattle but I would rather make the investment in livestock and let them do it.

I run the cows and sheep together and would like to bring in goats but that is going to take some planning in regards to mineral.
