14 dead in Middle Tennessee from flu-like symptoms

According to the latest reports, 14 people in Nashville and surrounding counties have died from having the flu while 441 have been hospitalized.
John Martin is a survivor after a bout with the H1N1 flu shut down his kidneys. Now he's on dialysis every other day.

The child from Northern Virginia was reportedly preschool age (0-4 years).

In Fairfax, Charles Hansbrough made sure his children got their flu shots several months ago, but he says the news of the death is absolutely heartbreaking.

"It's pretty sad and real...can't imagine something like that," he says.

The news comes as the Centers for Disease Control announces that Virginia is one of more than two dozen states where the flu is widespread.

Still, Arlington County’s Health Director says parent need not be alarmed:

"We don't have evidence that it's unusually putting children at risk, but flu is something that can always put children and adults at risk," explains Dr. Reuben Verghese. "While there's the death, let's focus on what parents can do -- they can still get their kids flu shots."

There seems to be plenty of the vaccine on hand this year, but workers at this Safeway pharmacy have seen fewer and fewer people asking for it.

"We haven't seen as much foot traffic as we did this time last year," says pharmacist Ola Davies. "I think it comes from people underestimating the severity of the flu. "

For those children who haven't yet gotten the flu shot, there are still things you can do to help keep them safe:

"Keep them home if they're sick, talk to a pediatrician; there are anti-viral medications that can help reduce the severity of the symptoms," says Dr. Verghese.

I almost NEVER get sick but.......
As a h1n1 swine flu 'survivor', I can say it was the worst Christmas/New Year holidays of my 63 year life. Hit my wife on Dec 24th, spent all Christmas Eve in E room with her, then I began feeling it's effects on Christmas Day. It took us over 2 weeks to fully recover, and it left us both weak, especially in leg muscles. I do not take the flu shots because they always made me very ill, but probably no worse than the real thing. I 'may' take it next year tho. I just worked thru it as best I could and drank a LOT of OJ, but it was miserable.

Flu cases are not mandantorily reportable to CDC but CDC has asked states where H1n1 is active to keep records. As of 2 Jan, Tarrant and Dallas Counties Texas (DFW) report over 3000 confirmed flu cases, with 95% being h1n1 swine flu. Over 300 hospitalized and 3 deaths.

Similar results in Harris County (Houston). In mid-December, 6 had died from h1n1 in Houston.

Bad cases here also! Being a Nurse, I can tell you, YOU DO NOT GET THE FLUE FROM THE FLUE VACCINE. To many people go without it because they believe they do. The vaccine does not cover all types of the flue. But will hopefully make your symptoms a bit shorter in duration and less severe if you do get it. This year it is hitting young, healthy, middle aged people harder than usual. (Not just the old and young.) Very scary!

im scared...got the flu and pneumonia shot. also hitting vitamin c and echinacea . hospital will kill you . bc anything else work as a preventive ?

Bad cases here also! Being a Nurse, I can tell you, YOU DO NOT GET THE FLUE FROM THE FLUE VACCINE. To many people go without it because they believe they do. !

No, the vaccine doesn't give you the flu and it most likely won't kill you either, but if you are like me, you will dang sure wish it did both.

Try not to shake hands! It is the biggest transmitter of the virus. Keep hand sanitizer handy, and use it often! If you do get sick, wear a mask into see the doc right away. (Someone else there may have a different strain to give to you!) They have an Anti Viral med. now to help lessen the duration if given early enough. WASH, WASH, WASH, is the key! Don't touch your face after being around people till you do.

Been my experience as well. It has left me very weak. Maybe it's my age, but imo, this strain is much worse than any I have ever experienced before. Wife took Tamiflu (prescription) and 2nd day, broke out in the biggest red whelps I have ever seen all over and had headaches that brought her to her knees. She had to stop taking it (doc told her to stop) and that stuff ain't cheap. $137.00 for 10 capsules.

That was in my mind as well, thought wow! you can get a cold from a plastic/metal pipe now :lol: Glad to say we have not got any strain that bad here yet. My Granddad died of the flu when that epidemic hit back in the 1950's.
I always have a flu shot.
