I have impatiens growing on my borders and they were going gangbusters for a while. Now something is cutting them right off at the base. Here today, cut off tomorrow. Nothing is eating the plant. What should I be spraying for? Help!

Sounds like you got slugs. They love em. Put a jar lid or two out amongst them and fill them with beer. Bet you'll find some drowned drunken slugs in the lids in the morning.

Lammie - I don't know if this will work for flowers, but my grandfather used to put a nail in the ground next to the stem to keep cutworms from cutting off his tomato plants.

If it does turn out to be slugs, mulch the area well with oak leaves and this will also help reduce slug problem. (Don't ask me why its just what ma and grandma have always said to do)
Diactamous (sp?) earth will also help control slugs. It has sharp edges that slice them up when they cross it. If memory serves, dried coffee grounds will help as well - something about the acid content I think.

Was reading an gardening book today and it mentioned cutworms. One of the remedies listed for this is to mulch with oak leaves. I guess ma and grandma knew something. I'd like to know why though. Tannic acid is my guess.

We always put salt around the plants to kill slugs.
