We are taking the boys (ages 3 - 16) and a few others to Orlando next week. There are a few 'down days' planned where we are not going to be fighting the masses at the big parks (the sweet smelling one says it's mostly for my sanity).

We enjoy getting off the beaten path, seeing some of the local things that make this country great. The boys would flip out if they saw a gator in the wild - a little nature/education, with some good food along the way is what I am looking for here.

There is also one evening where the kids are staying with some of my family and we are going out, any suggestions for a nice meal and some entertainment near Orlando (I would guess seafood is big down there, but I am open to suggestions for something we can't get here in Nebraska).

How many people? I can put you guys on some gators. Also, what's your budget on the Restaraunt?

lol i can show you gators that arent behind a fence.. Mosaic has some fishing pits that are wide open and all have a gator or 2 in them .. if the gator comes at you.. he isnt playing.... they should go away from humans... just a little info... some idiots here think its cute to feed them and then wonder why their precious pets become lunch... as far as dining in Orlando... there is a lot to choose from, not just seafood :) depending on how far you and the family want to drive... there are a lot of places here to go that aren't listed as a must see when you come to Florida... the Mosaic stuff is about 2 hrs south of Orlando...there is Cracker Country at the fair grounds .. thats off i-4 heading west to Tampa... its really interesting ..but no gators lol... best thing is to look at a map and let us know what sounds good to you and we can throw our 2 cents in :) i have a few places that i prefer besides the big attractions.. and hoonline does as well... he is north of me :)
 
oh one place for sure to stay away from is Dinosaur World... you have little ones and on I-4 there is a big dinosaur that is for that place... its is terrible.. and really lame for the price.. i took my son there once... we paid $7 each to get in.. we walked the place in about an 20 mins and the kids played in the fossil dig for another 20... the concession stand was a snack n soda machine.. but they added movement to the dinosaurs. and some noise... raised the price so now you get a headache long with the admission price :( my son was huge on dinosaurs... only reason we went.. cause when we went by it he would say lets go there... so we went.. never heard him ask that again... so it did have its bonus i guess lol

Yep. Winds been howling so we just fish the canals and chill out. Key west is a madhouse right now for New Years
 
Hook in 1992 my wife and I went to the Keys to buy a place on the water so I could keep fish trapping. We had a room for 3 nights at Boog Powell's Hotel. We spent 1 night there and she has never been back to the Key's. Needless to say you seen where we ended up going. Key West was not for us and the rest of the Keys weren't much better. I have friends that live in the Keys and they just love it. But they were from the city and never lived in the woods or hunted.

another place to go eat is Capones... its not overly priced and a lot of fun from what I have heard.. an old friend of mine used to go there a lot and took my daughter a couple of times. she enjoyed it... its a dinner and show type venue :)
 
I'm checking out Midevil times .. i sent a question to them and joined the Kings Court.. They sent a welcome email with a coupon for 20% off.. good for shows up too 12-30-12......are you sure they "just" closed down? lol will let you know what else they say.. :)
 
Shantilly (and others) - thanks for all the great advice where, and where not, to go. Medieval Times sounded like a cool place to take the kids, they certainly would have remembered it. Big hugs!

As far as more detail on the trip, we will be headed to a fish camp in Geneva one day for an air boat ride through the swamp (thanks Hook). The next "down" day will probably be spent on Cocoa Beach. I'd still like to squeeze in a trip to NASA, but don't know how much is really going on down there now that they shuttered the shuttle program.

John Reb - we were kicking around the idea of heading down there for the Gator Bowl, but the Huskers are so unpredictable - hot and cold. Good luck to S.C. vs. Wisconsin, Big 10 FB is not what it should be.
 
NASA stopped the shuttles but are still sending rockets up .. not sure what all they stopped ..but they still have stuff going on :) you can check it out online at their website.. gives all kinds of information.. :) i know you and yours will have lots of stories and wonderful memories from your trip here.. and before you come out..yes we are all that crazy here lol .. and no none of us can drive... and just when you think you have seen or heard it all some dummy in Florida will do something that will make you scratch your head... :)

I just happened to read about Arabian Nights today! Never went to that one, but I have been to Medieval Times, many moons ago. It was fun and I wonder if you still eat with no utensils? Kids loved that part.
 
man go to the space center...my 6 yr old loved it..do the bus tour too..very cool place
dino world was ok but we got in for a few bucks instead of full price..and its local for us..
gator world is a tourist trap..cool for the kids..local to Orlando
nickelodeon is a hotel in Orlando...man youll have a hard time figuring out what to do..

as for the midevil dinner thing..meh..if I wanna eat with my fingers ill go to hooks barb q
