feed Altosid every year in right now mineral emerald, fly control..but flies have got ahead of me this spring on my heifers (10) i have separated...saw someone on youtube/instagram etc walking among cattle and spraying from a hand pump/gallon spray tank on cattle......i can walk around my weaning heifers while feeding them range cubes, they are calm..not familiar with what they are spraying and what they are using to spray with...love some suggestions to walk among some calm heifers to spray for many different flies that are hitting them hard this spring.............video may have been for worming, but they don't need that..thanks for any advice North Mississippi, 45 momma cow operation

I generally use Fly Ban (in addition to mineral with garlic, CTC and Altosid). And I just dump cubes and walk through the herd, including the bulls, calves and retained heifers. Gets pretty much all the flies except horseflies and I don't know anything that will repel those evil, blood sucking giants.
Permethrin or Co-Ral both out of a hand sprayer.
If you buy the gallon jugs if Brute or any of the pour-ons you get a gun with them. For me the gun is easier in the open because it's one shot down the back vs having to spray for a bit with a hand sprayer.

The wife is on me to buy a fogger but I'm a little leary about spraying them with diesel once a week and mineral oil is expensive. Flys have gotten terrible the last 3-4 years, no telling what the production loss is. The only thing I've found that seems to work for several weeks is the generic pour on wormer.

I've finally gotten set up to do a better job rotationally so hoping by not bringing them back for a month to same paddock will help with fly's. We also run lick tubs with fly control. Last year was our best from a fly number

Might consider changing your pass through IGR from Altosid to Clarify. Purina Wind and Rain made that change last year and seemed to work well for me.
I also keep a fly rub up and soak it with Permethrin from a small hand sprayer. Seems to work well and the cows can treat themselves whenever they like.

I use a vet gun, rubs with permethrin, fly control in the minerals. On the vet gun it has been costing me less than $2 a cow but with the AIM L capsules it controls flies and lice.(Must be some strong chemicals because the flies cut a trail immediately) I use this during peak fly season and as soon as you hit the cows the flies leave from what I have seen 3 to 4 weeks.

This is the style gun I like. It has two tips. One is a wide and one is a direct pattern. The direct pattern can easy spray around 10ft. It super easy to walk down the line and give them a squirt down the back.
You can run Brute, Saber, cylene, Boss, etc all through it. Just hold on to the jug and gun.

I'll have to do some research on this.
I haven't come across it before.
On the applicator vs the pump sprayer, I've had much better luck with a 1/2 gallon pump sprayer. I just dump a 1/2 gallon in pump it up and load up my fly rub. Seems to be the right amount to saturate the rub.
Sadly, we have to run both. I dont use the rubs because the buzzards destroy ours. They tear them to pieces. I do use the bags with powder. I think the rubs actually worked better than the bags but with in a couple weeks the bags were destroyed.
The bags kind of maintain them and help with the lice and stuff but the flies get so bad some times, like right now, that we still have to apply.
We are getting tore up right now with this weather. Flies, ticks, lice... all horrible. Any thing thay comes near a pen is getting run through and soaked with Co-Ral, along with the bags, and applications down their backs.
Its a real pia....

As soon as my wife saw the face flies on the cows early this year I was done for... She demanded the rub be put back up and loaded with Permethrin. :ROFLMAO:
I will say they were earlier this year due to a warmer March. I had gone away from feed through IGR over the winter, but normally keep it out year round.

I use a one gallon pump up sprayer with Ultraboss. I use the nozzle with a round hole for the jet/stream pattern, not the spray tip. Adjusted for max flow rate to get enough on their topline before they walk away.
I have used Wind and Rain mineral with fly control for several years. Swap over to the fly control version in late Feb. Later in the season, I will need to spray a few times to knock the flies back. Swap back to the regular mineral in cold weather. I get pretty good control with that combination. I gave up on rotating ear tags years ago.
Don't let them run out of mineral. They have to consume enough every day for control.
