Noticed one of my 2nd year cows was due to calve yesterday, and when I went out yesterday morning, found her standing over the calf. Beautiful black heifer calf, still warm, but dead.. eyes poked out. DAM vultures! I know it was them because they have been around the past few weeks.. Ran em off yesterday evening, from another newborn and its mama. Time for the killing machine. Just pizzes me off ..

Hate them too, but pecking out the eyes might not have killed the calf. That calf might have been DOA.

Cow had a calf on 8/8. A sniper has been working the farm for about 2 years. The program is working. Not a single buzzard got close. Two years ago, I had to be present at each birth or the buzzards would be around them like a swarm of honeybees.

I was helping a guy pour a concrete slab yesterday. One of the others helping has cattle in extreme northern KY. He said he puts calving cows in the barn now otherwise the buzzards peck their eyes out. This is a bad problem here. Most people only have 20 brood cows and work off the farm. The cows net a few hundred dollars a year. If they lose a couple calves to buzzards, well, it will not take long until you will conclude having a few beef cows is throwing away your time.

Sorry you lost a calf to those dam fowl!

Ground was tore up some, but they were in a heavy forage area, so lots of thick grass. I'm sure it was the buzzards. no doubt in my mind the calf was not DOA.
