Im currently looking into purchasing cattle to incorporate into the family operation. We have always had purebred hereford cattle up until last year. We ran the heifers with a black angus bull this past year in an effort to get into the black baldies. (just trying it) my question is this. Is it better to run hereford dams on a black angus bull, or is it better to put black angus or baldie dams on a hereford bull? Same result or does one bring better results? Thank you

This might sound strange since I love angus mamas. I prfer hereford cows and angus bulls to get black baldies. Something about brindle faced calves.

To me, it depends on the mamas. If you have large framed and heavy milking hereford cows, I would use them. If you get large framed, heavy milking blacks (maybe with 1/8 diary) I would use them. You can get an outstanding bull of either breed, but it isnt so easy to find those heavy milking, large framed cows. If you get the blocky, old time angus with no milk or the fat back non-milking herefords, you are wasting your time.

try thinking long-term instead of just about 1 year. find a system that meets your goals. if black baldies is what you want to create routinely, you will probably end up with bulls of each breed and cows of varying percentages of Angus and herf to put them on.

hi weezer,

going with the baldies huh? a man after my own heart! just like every question on here, what you should do depends on many factors that probably only you can answer. i do it both ways, and although i have many more black mama's than hereford mama's it varies from moment to moment which way i think makes more sense. just like you and everyone else on here, i have my own reasons for doing what i do, so do your research and then make up your mind and go for it and don't look back. Just monitor things closely, if you run into a snag, correct it, move on and don't do it again.

from an pure emotional standpoint, i sure do love the looks of a big old hereford bull surrounded by a bunch of hereford mama's and babies!!
