How long is your growing season in South Dakota? Can you grow tomatoes? The soil is still too cold in Oregon. I'm keeping my plants under windows in the house. If you plant them too soon they just sit there and don't grow until the soil warms up. Maybe in a couple of weeks.
 
Yeah, wayyyy early for mellons. Even here in OH I don’t bother planting before Memorial Day, except for cold season vegetables like lettuce, peas, etc… Planting any earlier than that usuaully ends of with one cold night setting the entire garden back weeks.

Lots of tomatoes grown here but I have a black thumb with tomatoes. My boy grows them by the basket full
