This afternoon right at dark I spotted a month old heifer calf that appeared to have a partial rectal prolapse. A small bulge of pink in the rectal area...in the pasture she and her mother are in I do not have any corral or pen...we bring them down the road to pen. I had no help and could not move them and the rest of the herd they are running with.

Have you seen this and what is the remedy...saw her urinate but holding her tail out like in some pain or discomfort...probably two days before I can have help in moving her!

Thanks for advice....pappy

I had a heifer in a group of newly weaned calves that had a rectal prolapse. It went back in on its own, before I could get her up. I attributed it to over eating, but I will never know for sure why it happened. I had decided to leave the gravity fed pellet wagon with Rye grass screening pellets for them to eat free choice while grazing. Those calves went through way more pellets than my math said they should, so I have never done that again. I now always limit feed pellets and good hay. She was a big growthy heifer, and I wanted to keep her as a replacement, but I was worried about that prolapse. I ended up keeping her anyway and I still have her 8 years latter and she just gave birth to her 8th calf. The problem has never reoccurred. I hope yours works out the same.

Maybe a urine infection or constipated? I've seen a calf do this before but can't remember how the vet treated it.

It depends on how severe the problem is. Photos would be nice. If there is a lot of tissue sticking out, you may have to suture it (purse string suture).

Thanks for the replies...been offline a few days with the weather...calf cleared up ok...hard to see the cause as she only was nursing and eating a little bit of hay...may have been constipated but didn't see her straining but just holding her tail away from the bulge...pictures for a technological novice are a pipe dream!! Wish I had the experience when I spotted the problem if it could have helped to diagnose or help others.

Thanks and good luck...pappy
