We had moved all the cows and heifers, except 3 of them. We decided to leave two cows that had not calved yet and had to get the 3rd cow and her calf that we missed the week before. Once we had them penned we were kinda of concerned because one of the cows had a huge bag and no calf. So, we went ahead and moved the cow/calf pair and let the other two out. We came back hoping to find a calf somewhere. We found it all alone. Went and checked it out. A bull calf. Wouldn't move. It let us check it out, touch it, pet it, and lift back leg to check gender. All this is a first for us. We backed off waiting for Momma cow to show up. She did in a few minutes. They took off for a new hiding spot. We followed for a while hoping to see the calf nurse but it seemed Momma didn't like us around so we let them be. This is her 2nd calf so I'm hoping everything will be fine. Our calves seem to be so scared of us their first couple months it was just neat to walk up on one that was probably only a day old. Can't really explain it in words. Nature at is best! I know that momma put that calf there and told that calf to wait for her to come back. When that Momma cow came back that is the first time we saw the calf stand up. And of course he went to her Momma. When that cow decided she didn't want us following her she took off at a trot and that was the first time we saw that calf do the same. Just wanted to share an experience that for a newb was really neat. We normally don't see the calves till the cows decide to bring them up to us. This is the first time we manage to find the hiding spot.
