Our first heifer is in the midst of labor right now. I'm nervous as an expectant grandmother. That's all.

Well, maybe "calving" was a false alarm term. Forgive my newbieness? She's definitely in labor, pacing all night, etc. Now another cow has joined her. Might be a fun weekend.

Is she pacing because you're starring at her at 300am in the morning???!!!
;-) :lol2: :pop:

I keep telling myself, sometimes less is more

Well, I wasn't sleeping anyway, so I figured I'd check on them. :D I actually could see her out there pacing and I hadn't turned on any lights in the house or the flashlight at that point, just by the moonlight. This is my first go round so I'm sure I will be less anxious the next time and know more of what I'm seeing. ;-)

Update: 58# heifer calf born at 1600. Beautiful, short marked with pigment. Second cow is birthing now. Pictures later.

Congrats TCFRH!!! I was in your shoes this past late winter/ early spring. It's such an exciting time & I hope it never becomes otherwise. Keep us posted & put some pics up.

I've been witnessing the birth of calves, and other creatures, for many years. I never get tired of the miracle! I am always amazed that that little calf, just seconds ago, was floating around in a warm bag of water in the dark, now its in the daylight/moonlight breathing air and standing and drinking milk. Its a wonderful thing, especially when it all goes as planned.

First calf, BW 58, heifer. Short marked, nice pigment. Dam is very gentle.

Second calf, BW 65, bull. His coloration is like his sire, chocolate brown. Dam is flighty so I didn't want to get too close for too long. I'll try for better pictures tomorrow.

  Happy that all went well with your first grand babies!

Still always exciting for me also, after all these years! :)
