My first calf heifer finally calved as well as its first heifer/cow I’ve ever bought feels great calved no assistance checked her around 1:50 am and gave her 30 mins later a calf she was cleaning calf off but I guess it’s true she picked the Coldest and rainy morning to calf. Just feels bittersweet got her when she was 6 months got her half sister as well that’s due in less then a month praying hoping for many more calfs out of her.




 
glad all is going well. nice if they all calf with no problem and raise a nice health calf. guessing you feel like a new daddy. :)

lol ha It’s my first time calving heifers as well as new bull but he is lbw i definitely can see now .
Yeah I wasn’t this nervous when my fiancé had our first child lol

Depends. I have 2 this year I decided to keep the day they were born, based on lineage and how early they were born during the calving season. The others I plan to keep are based on docility, how well they've grown, structure, sire/dam, overall health, how well they've done during weaning, etc. But the final results will be contingent on their pelvic measurements.
 
All my heifers are replacements. I put a price on them according to how much I want to keep them in my herd. So, I keep what I don't sell. Generally sell a mixture of bottom, middle & top. I have culled a few heifers over the years based on temperament. If they aren't "sweet" enough to be in my herd, I don't sell them to another breeder.

This one is gentle like her mom only been 3 days but she walks up to me let’s me touch her or if she laying down let me touch all over
 


My other heifer half sister had her calf tonight got a surprise when I got home tonight . Both had heifers early Christmas to me.
 
Nice looking heifers you got there, glad things went smooth. I’m always amazed at the kind of weather baby calves can take if the mother cow will tend to them.

Give her another week and her instincts will kick in and she wont be so friendly. Unless their is something obviously wrong with my heifers i try to let them all have a first calve and cull on their performance from then. But i am still new to this purebred thing, i found crossbreds much easier.
 
Ahhh yes. The very first one is always special.
My first cow I raised from a 400lb heifer. She was bred to a black dexter bull for her first calf. My buddy says u are gonna laugh when she calves. He throws 40lb calves.
Calf was born no problem. Just woke up one morning and mama was cleaning her up. She was NOT 40 lbs! More like 75. I kept her to build my herd for no other reason than I could, so i did!
I've still got her. She just finished raising her second calf.
She lost the first one. Didnt get it out in time, but luck was on my side and a good friend gave me a twin they had. She raised it after 2 weeks of me putting her in the chute and baby nursing.
So yeah, I'd have been money ahead to sell her, but she stays
