Our Brahmans will show for a month or more some times. It would drive some of yall nuts. Yall would be in the red just off gas money by the time the calf was born.

A purebred South Poll bull out of Missouri. What are they bred to?
Do you have a special market for the calves?
As long as you expect to sell from home it wont matter as much. SP is frowned upon pretty heavily in your area at the stockyards. I have a friend raising some but he sell all private treaty. To be determined.
South Polls are very much a maternal bred, so they're popular with homesteaders and the regenerative ag crowd. I decided to try them out because my wife didn't want black hided cattle. I'm only in them 50% heifers and the cows are bred to the South Polls bull. I didn't pay really any of a premium for the herd vs black cattle because they're all commercial SP.
Purebreds bring a premium private treaty and you're allowed to bred up, but with all that comes registration and being apart of the association.
Long term plan is to raise claves to sell for beef for myself and family members. I know that takes a longer time and more inputs.
I do know they would likely be docked at any local sale barn for being red and SP.

Yes exactly. I like the cross cows but some calves need more muscle.Being only in 50% I could always cross with a terminal breed to make the calves more marketable at the stock yards.
Could easily get a black hide too.

A good homozygous Black Simmental or a good Charolais can get you calves that sell good there. Plus add a lot of pounds.
To add some meat you might consider a Limousin.Since the wife and I tend to like red hides, I am very interested in a red charloias.
Curious what my first calf crop looks like. Well help me make some decisions.
Got plenty of flexibility with my small herd.
You might consider Limousin. I haven't seen many people here that like them but from what I can gather they've only heard bad things and never had experience. On the other hand I've had a lot of them and liked them all. Great mothers, easy calving, and docile if you look for docile ones. And good ones will put the muscle in your calves. The only thing I didn't like was some had ugly udders, but the udders didn't break down, they were just ugly.Since the wife and I tend to like red hides, I am very interested in a red charloias.

Check into the TN Master Cattlemen program. I think it gives you some extra on the TAEP once your finished.TAEP should fund me as a beginning farmer and I can use it towards genetics.
That would give me $2,000 towards a bull that met their EPD's. Still looking into all that.
AI would probably make better sense for my small operation, but $2k towards a bull that would be around for a while and I could sell for slaughter when he got tires and replace him could make a decent cycle.
Had a buddy have to sell one of his balancer bulls recently due to bad cracked feet, he left some cows open and he decided to not include any info on him being registered and brought enough money for a slaughter bull to pay him a new young register black Angus bull.

Great. TN sure helps cattle producers a lot. We have a class each winter at LMU vet school that helps qualifify or keeps current the TN program. It does, but I qualify for the full amount now because of beginning farmer. It's only on two programs though.
To be a master producer you have to have a minimum of 30 head, beginning farmer only requires 5 head, which I can do for two years in a row.
I took the beginning farmer course and applied this year. If I am approved I plan on using the money for a working pen and chute.
Second calf for the season, this calf confirmed our sim angus bull isn't homozygous black although this old cow is the only one that has ever had a red calf by him. We get smokey's out of the charloais crosses but all black other than this cow's calves, (some black baldies and a lot of Motts) she has had 2 blacks by him and this red bull calf. I guess my odds aren't all that bad, and the bull is a LBW but fast growth bull. She should probably be culled, I think she's 7 this year, but she does raise a good calf that grows like a weed every year like clockwork that sell for more than she would bring. She makes a lot of milk, and her bag isn't that great but I don't think I'll cull her yet.Thursday evening update. She is getting closer, but no calf.
