I held off as long as I could, but the grass is finally eaten down enough that I had to put out the first hay bale when I got home last night. Even with the 11" rain shortage this year we still ended up with more hay than last year and didn't have to start feeding in November so we should be more than good to go until spring. And we don't even need any of those ice storms this year!!!

We went through a little over a dozen bales left from last year in July and August at our leased land for the same reason.
 
been haying the cows since thanksgiving.only put out 8 bales so far.put out 4 bales at a time.an that last about 10 days.feeding prolly 65hd.
 
I put out one bale for the weaned claves a couple of weeks ago and half of it is still there. The cows are still on stockpiled fescue pasture. It's snowing and icing now, hope it doesn;t get bad enough that I have to put out hay. If not I should be good till at least mid-December and maybe a little longer before I have to start.
 
We've been feeding hay for 2 months. No stockpile, no rain, no pasture, no rye, no nothing. Glad I've got a few hundred rolls :)

It's dry here........

We've been feeding hay since about 11/1 and doing good for a 5x6 roll to last a day (in a ring). We got about 60 acres of winter grazing in so hopefully only another 3-4 weeks befor we can turn in on that then probably go through 2 rolls a week..
 
I started feeding weekend of Thanksgiving, cows eating more than I figured they would, but we do not have that much rye and clover yet. I am feeding last year's hay, couple more weeks and I start on this year's
 
fed a 144 rolls in Nov. never really stopped... maybe about a month or 2 didn't feed any. drought sucks!!!
 
Depending on where the ice line sets up tomorow I may be putting out hay tomorrow, maybe even today if the weather liars have the timeline wrong
 
ive fed 133 peanut hay rolls and about 50 bermudas already. its goint to be a long winter. but hey, its in the 80s this week! woot.
 
With the ice covering we had I put out hay this morning. Most of the cows came up and fed some. When it hit 33 degrees and the ice melted on the grass they all headed back out and grazed late this afternoon.
It's iceing again now so it will be interesting in the morning to see which they're eating
 
Exactly what I had to do... . put out a bale this morning.. half I rolled out.. the other I put in an open shed.. they ate most of it, then headed out to continue grazing on a pasture they havent been on all summer.
 
I have been feeding since 4th of July. fescue hay and corn stalks and gorn gluten. And only had a 1/4 of an average hay crop. bought the other 3/4 plus some. this year is going to be real bad for the check book.
 
We live in central mo. and got hit hard by the ice. A lot of power outages. Been feeding hay for at lest a month. Have plenty of hay. Only have 8 cows but my childhood dream of working with cattle has come true. with 30 acres to work with I'm planning on the auction tonight as they are going very cheap.
 
I am still grazing turnips for my pasture cattle and then plan to graze stockpiled orchard grass and fescue after that, but of course we can deep snow anytime, that is the wild card. So far we have had plenty of ice and some small amounts of snow that caused the turnip greens to wilt but they are still green and the cows are still eating them like crazy, so far I have gotten 2 months grazing the turnips. I have some rolls offered to the cattle that they can reach by stretching under some poly-wire but they only knaw on them occassionally. Tough to decide right now how many of the rolls to sell versus keep on reserve. Hay is selling really good right now.
