Finally a Beagle

I see that after all these many years a beagle finally won best of show at the Westminster show. Long overdue. Apparently this little guy was really barking and baying up a storm and was also the crowd favorite.

Do any of you folks still hunt cottontails with beagles these days?

What worries me is that they will soon find that a beagle barks and digs and is not a good house dog so get prepared for them to be abandoned or placed in shelters in a year or two.

Beagles make great family dogs, just can`t let them lose on a hike in the woods.

Kid up the road from me hunts with beagles every day he's not in school. I think he has 5 and usually does pretty good at getting the rabbit to the dinner table.
I used to hunt beagles all the time but just too many irons in the fire these last few years!

Don't know much about Beagles, but I fear you may both be right. Remember years ago when "101 Dalmations" came out? Everybody wanted one and many found out they couldn't handle them.

My wife shows and breeds Alaskan Malamutes. After the movie "Snow Dogs" came out we got dozens of calls from people wanting them.

We have a beagle, cute little devil...

...he has absolutely no liking for pop-up sprinklers in the yard... at our old house he would dig them up, chew them off, and deliver them to the sliding back door... thankfully no sprinkler heads in the yard at this house so no sprinkler repairs for the last few years!

...he also feels compelled to bay at every delivery truck that drives by... and also when he feels the need to tell you it's time for his dinner

Had three or four for years loved to rabbit hunt, problem with Beagles is they need to be kept in a kennel when not hunting. They are not going to stay home the hunting instinct is to strong, and as another poster said they like to dig. Only breed of dog I could not teach to shut up in the kennel.

On a slightly different note: When did german shepards become all slouch assed like the ones that they show? I always thought a dog should stand up square!

I think they look awful. Almost makes you think it's not normal.

My dad got me a beagle for my 11th birthday. He got me a .410 shotgun for my 12th birthday and that was the first of many happy hunting seasons for me and Champ. Dad would take he and I out to the farm and drop us off and come back and get us later in the day. When I moved out at the age of 18 he stayed with the folks. Finally wandered off somewhere to die when he was around 14 yo. I honestly don't remember him digging all that much but we didn't keep him penned up. We lived in town and we just let him roam. He ran rabbits around the neighborhood all year round but that was the only time he bayed much. I've had several since and none of them was worth the powder to blow them away. I'd really like to have one more good hunting beagle. Won't be long before I can start taking the grandson. He'll never make it as a squirrel hunter. Boy can't stop talking. Don't know where he gets that.

Can you imagine a dog spending a couple of hours herding cattle with that shape to it?
